It used to be a hot item for domainers to search for up and coming sports stars and register their .com names if they were not already have registered. Does anyone still do this and if so, have you had an legal problems with the now famous sports stars?

I've backed away from registering the names of famous and other people. I didn't ever have any problems, but I no longer feel comfortable with it. I think the only one I've got left is HarlemHeat.com. They were a pro wrestling tag team, but I think they retired several years ago. I might find another use for the name, or maybe I will sell it. I gather they were quite good, so maybe someone will want to set up a tribute site.

It would be a great name for a plumbing company. :)

I don't have such names, but was going to register an expired one - Pistorious.com.
When checked the spelling I found out that not only it is wrong spelled, but Pistorius had just trademarked his name.

Yeah, they were a team in WCW in the 90's which was later bought by WWE. I'd assume they hold the TM now. One half of the team, Booker T went on and became a multiple time world champion and is still around today on commentary. I'm sure the domain could be used for multiple purposes besides wrestling.

Regarding the question, I stay away from any full names that could lead to a dispute. I do hold about 40 single first names or surnames though, mostly in .co.uk
