I have the domain Clinical/Weight/Loss(Dot)com parked at sedo and all of a sudden it got some sort of traffic surge. It normally gets 1, 2, or 3, 4 at most visits per day. All of a sudden starting on the 13th it got 66 visits, then the 14th 99 visits, then the 15th 224 visits, and now the 16th just started and it is already up to 61 visits.

I was hoping someone could possibly help me identify where all this traffic might be coming from(it appears to be increasing)????

Thanks for the help.

What's the visitor origin breakdown when this happens? If it's coming from a non traditionally English speaking country then the traffic my be suspect. Also, this happens to some of my domains for reasons like a show on TV, say Oprah having a guest discussing the topic/a big news story that involves the subject/radio show topic could be anything etc. and BAM!

I've had this happen to a few of my domains at SEDO.. In my cases, there were ALWAYS no clicks at all, just views(about 100-200 a day).... Then, after a few weeks, the traffic disapears just as mysteriously as it arrived....

If you are getting clicks and revenue with this traffic, then your situation is different than mine... But, if you have no clicks, then I suspect the traffic is some sort of glitch....

@ mjbenterprises

Yeah, you are absolutely right. It happened with me too.

Also, it's the time of year when people make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, quit smoking, etc., so maybe that's why there has been a surge of traffic.

It's pretty much all from the USA, but it is getting almost no clicks. It's very weird.

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately Sedo stats are unreliable.
I have had domains getting 100 UV/day but no click, CTR=0%

So I hosted one suspect domain to get raw traffic stats and it actually gets one UV/day, not more. Bottom line: the Sedo stats sometimes are completely screwed up.

If only you could setup google Analytics stats and track it..

Ms Domainer makes a good point, hopefully it turns into a sale?

Last year I had a recent hand reg (we'll call #1) in my Sedo account start to get a lot of traffic, 100+ a day with clicks and earnings of $50+ a month.
Then within days, another name (#2), which was a slight variation of #1, started generating about the same earnings.
I just knew I had a winner between the two.

After a month I received a notice from Sedo that an advertiser did not like the quality of the traffic that #1 was receiving. Keyword was virtually the same as the name.
Sedo confiscated the earnings and even removed the name from parking.

I received no comment about #2 and I did receive payment for the month.
Oddly, the traffic stopped completely right after the monthly stat change and never returned.

It's not a total mystery though. At least at one point during that month, I am aware that parked name #1 was displaying credit card ads.
It was not a credit card related name and I did not set a credit card related keyword.

I've had a couple of traffic surges over the last few months, 2 names that usually get a few hundred visitors per month both ended up getting over 1500 in the month, One made over its reg fee and the other only made 0.08 :'(

Sometimes it happens because a news article somewhere has sparked people to search.

If you set a Google news alert using the keywords in "your domain" it's often helps to figure out from where.

(just make sure you put the words "between quotes" of you may end up getting dozens of alerts every day, I made that mistake already )

The other most obvious thing is check to see if the same domain (as yours) has recently been registered in another extension, if it has then do a whois on that one, I've used this method a few times with success.

It appears Sedo counts raw clicks as unique views. Same thing happens to one of my domains parked at Sedo - thousands of UV every month and only a few clicks (approx. 0.5% CTR).

It always takes some work to figure it out, but it would help if the stats provided showed more data.

Here are some potentials:

The .net could of been developed and you are getting typo traffic
The domain became indexed (currently only 2 pages, so not likely the source)
Plural version of the domain got developed
Some site mentioned your domain instead of a different one (mistake)
Hyphen version domain launched

skulldude, I feel your pain... I had a domain at parked.com suddenly spike up to thousands of visits/day. I moved it to fabulous yesterday to see if I could determine the traffic source. Today, it showed 200 uniques. All I can tell is that the majority of the traffic is US. There's no other clue where the visits might be coming from. There's also no clicks. I can't find any backlinks to the domain, either. Very weird.

If anybody has a clue how to tell where this traffic is coming from, please post it here.

Sedo is unreliable about traffic stats. If it receives clicks, then there are good chances it's real. But i've had several domains receiving literally thousands of uv/day, with 0 clicks at all. It goes for months, then i've decided to build three minisites for three of those domains, with google analytics code for each one.
Results? Suddenly no traffic.

A way to verify if your traffic is fake or not is checking the Alexa Rank. Even if it's not exact or very important to determine the traffic, it could give you an idea.
