If you have a great domain idea that is peculiar to a geographic location, such as Australia, say, but you live in another country, how do you go about registering it?

Do you make a deal with someone from Australia? If so, how do you find one?

I think I have some cool domain name ideas for Australian businesses. However, I live in the USA.
What do I do?

Yes, you have to live in Oz and have an ABN (Australian Business Number) to register .com.au domains

You can have a Australia business presence or an Australian trademark application to register a .com.au if you live outside Australia

I'd like to register both if they're available. However, the key (modified) word would be most suited for Oz business.

For example, socceroos(dot)com(dot)au is in use whereas socceroos(dot)com is not.

You can have a Australia business presence or an Australian trademark application to register a .com.au if you live outside Australia

I was under the impression that you have to live in Australia to be able to do that. Plus, being a domainer, I am more interested in the domain itself, and then later propose it to Australian businesses.

Precisely. But since I do not, I was wondering if there were any Australian domainers here who could suggest ways and means.

Example is that you are an international business and have a branch or possible partnership in Australia

I P Australia are in charge a trademark applications and that is the other way, apply for a trademark

Not likely worth the effort as many Aussies don't even know what a domain is, or are unwilling to pay much for it if they do happen to know about them. The other thing is that .au is on the horizon and it is a bit unclear how this will effect the Aussie domain market/prices. Depending on the scale of the business sometimes they will simple grab a .net.au instead of the .com.au

I really haven't looked into this so not sure if there are any loopholes for this.

The thing about Australian websites besides having right domain and extension is the limited audience due to population.

Australian Domain Name Ownership

Eligibility

Who is eligible to hold a .com.au or .net.au domain?

There are eligibility requirements that must be met in order to register or take ownership of a .com.au or .net.au domain license.

.com.au and .net.au domains are both for commercial purposes.

To be eligible for a .com.au or .net.au domain name, registrants must be:

a) an Australian registered company; or

b) trading under a registered business name in any Australian State or Territory; or

c) an Australian partnership or sole trader; or

d) a foreign company licensed to trade in Australia; or

e) an owner of an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or

f) an applicant for an Australian Registered Trade Mark; or

g) an association incorporated in any Australian State or Territory; or

h) an Australian commercial statutory body.

The full policy for .com.au and .net.au domains is available on the .au Domain Administration Ltd (auDA) website: 2012-04 โ€“ Domain Name Eligibility and Allocation Policy Rules for the Open 2LDs

Can an overseas business hold a .com.au or .net.au domain?

a) A foreign company licensed to trade in Australia.

b) Yes if a business has or has applied for an Australian trademark.

Cheers
Corey
