Why are there such huge differences in pricing between extensions? I can pick up a .com for about $7, then .info's are dirt cheap (but just for the first year). Then there's all the other domains that can go up to $40-$xxx a year?!? D-: Why?

Basically supply and demand. It's a corporate entity and every other registrar is vying to compete with the next one.

As for the ccTLD's I believe they are able to set their own prices and regulations but don't quote me on that.

So does that mean .com's are no longer in demand? Or .info's?

ccTLD's should have some restrictions on pricing. Some of them are insane. You would think that they would want to offer their extension at a reasonable price to get more buyers.

market economy, if it is too expensive and they want to attract more buyers, then
they will lower the price

cctlds put a high price to discourage massive speculation in their respective cctlds.

.TM - Turkmenistan is $1000 for ten years (and you cannot get a shorter term) ($600 start up and $40 / year.)

I think that is the record. Of course the idea is that corporations will want to protect their TM (trade mark). No idea haw many they have sold.

Like -Adam- said, every country can set its own prices for their domains. The gTLDs (com/net/org/info) are all reasonably priced for the mass market.
