Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has now been dubbed Comirnaty, which the company says represents a combination of the terms COVID-19, mRNA, community, and immunity.
I don't know about the rest of the vaccines, but Pfizer has been calling its vaccine Comirnaty from the begining of 2021.
Anyway its vaccine will still be called "Pfizer" or "Pfizer-Comirnaty" although its technical name its Comirnaty.
Also the US Trademark for "Comirnaty" was filled in June 1, 2020 and registered in April 6, 2021.
The European Trademark for "Comirnaty" was filled in May 30, 2020 and registered in October 07, 2020.

Comirnaty (Pfizer)

Approval for use in Australia

https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines/approved-vaccines/pfizer

Comirnaty (Pfizer) is approved for use in people aged 12 years and over.

The TGA provisionally approved it for use in Australia on 25 January 2021 (for 16 years and over) and 22 July 2021 (for 12 years and over).

----------------

Comirnaty

https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/human/EPAR/comirnaty

Date of issue of marketing authorisation valid throughout the European Union: 21/12/2020

Comirnaty is a vaccine for preventing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in people aged 12 years and older.

Comirnaty contains a molecule called messenger RNA (mRNA) with instructions for producing a protein from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Comirnaty does not contain the virus itself and cannot cause COVID-19.

Pfizer asks FDA for emergency authorization for its Covid vaccine for kids ages 5-11

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-new...rization-its-covid-vaccine-kids-ages-n1280999

"Pfizer and BioNTech announced Thursday that they had submitted an emergency request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for authorization of the companies' two-dose Covid-19 vaccine in children ages 5 to 11.

"With new cases in children in the U.S. continuing to be at a high level, this submission is an important step in our ongoing effort against #COVID19," Pfizer tweeted. "We’re committed to working with the FDA with the ultimate goal of helping protect children against this serious public health threat."

Covid crisis dramatically worsened global mental health, study finds

Cases of anxiety and depression around the world increased dramatically in 2020, researchers have found, with an estimated 76m extra cases of anxiety and 53m extra cases of major depressive disorder than would have been expected had Covid not struck.

The study is the latest to suggest the pandemic has taken a serious toll on mental health, and that women and young people are more likely to be affected than men or older people.

Went to get my flu shot the other day...the quad dose. After getting swabbed the pharmacist was looking at the paperwork and suddenly stopped. I asked what was wrong and he asked me if I knew the price...I said 'no' and he told me it would be $45. I've never paid more than 20. He confided that the cost for the chain was just under $5 per dose. I put my sleeve down and walked away.

Twindemic warning: COVID-19 and flu season will collide this winter

Winter is coming. And so is the “twindemic” – a wave of influenza (flu) and a Delta variant-fueled surge of COVID-19, which are set to strike at the same time.

We asked Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, for his advice on how we can keep ourselves safe and healthy through the season.

Will this year’s flu season be different from last year’s flu season?
Last year, people were worried about a bad flu season on top of COVID, and it didn't happen because everybody was masking and social distancing. Many things were still closed because of lockdowns.

We had historically low rates of influenza and other respiratory virus transmission last year.

In fact, here at UC Davis Medical Center, we didn't have anybody admitted for influenza last year. In a normal year, somewhere between 40 and 150 kids die from influenza in the U.S., but last year, one child died from influenza. That just shows you how much the masking and social distancing really helped.

This year, things are much more open and we are already seeing the transmission of respiratory viruses like influenza in the community. So it's not going to be the same. People have lost a year in terms of being exposed to influenza and developing some sort of protective immunity.

We do expect a return to a more normal influenza season this year. It might be even worse because people have not been exposed to influenza recently. So I would really encourage everybody to get vaccinated for influenza this year. (more...)

Interesting ... I hadn't thought of that.

It's disgusting that the drug store chain is trying to profit "bigly" from the flu season. Glad you walked away.

Why you might have a hard time finding your favorite McCormick spices at the grocery store

New York (CNN Business)If you hoped grocery stores this fall and winter would look like they did in the Before Times, with limitless options stretching out before you in the snack, drink, candy and frozen foods aisles, get ready for some disappointing news.

Many of the country's biggest food makers are telling grocers that that they will have limited quantities of a number of their products, including things like Rice Krispies Treats, Sour Patch Kids, some Ben & Jerry's ice cream flavors, McCormick gourmet spices, and Marie Callender's pot pies because of labor, commodity and transportation constraints throttling supply chains, according to emails viewed by CNN and interviews with grocers. Some suppliers are also telling grocers to cancel their promotions of these items and more over the holidays so these items won't disappear from store shelves as quickly.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/09/business/grocery-stores-food-supply-chain/index.html

I've been experiencing this for the last month or so. It's hard to find even basic items like cream cheese.

U.S. travelers are back in the saddle again. But they've adapted to a new reality

After surging coronavirus cases during the spring scuttled a much-anticipated cruise trip to Montreal, Nate Burglewski and his extended family really wanted to gather this summer — while also staying safe.

The trip had to meet a few requirements: a destination that wasn't too far for elderly relatives in the Midwest, had strict local coronavirus safety measures, and offered lots of outdoor activities. Burglewski and his wife live in upstate New York, while other relatives are scattered around the country.

Staff shortages plague hospitals as COVID patients fill half of Montana’s ICU beds

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations decline across the country, the pandemic in Montana has continued to get worse. The average number of hospitalizations grew by nearly 40% over the past month. Health care workers are trying to keep up, and some are pushing the state to do more to help.

Thirty-three-year-old Brandon Brigham says he wasn’t taking the pandemic seriously before he landed in the ICU at Billings Clinic.

Just didn’t think it was a big deal, hanging out at the bar, playing pool,” Brigham says.

Merck’s antiviral pill reduces hospitalization of Covid patients, a possible game-changer for treatment

“If this pans out, it will change the landscape,” said Andy Pavia, chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at University of Utah. “There’s still a lot we need to know. What does the side effect profile look like? Do we know how to dose it in populations that are different such as children and the obese? But as a top-line result, this is definitely exciting.”

What we know and don’t know about Merck’s new Covid-19 pill

Doctors are excited about the medicine, molnupiravir, because a regimen of pills, even one that involves taking several pills twice a day for five days, should be far easier to deliver to patients than current antiviral Covid-19 treatments, which must be given intravenously. But it’s still unclear how widely this treatment will be used.

Why people who don’t trust vaccines are embracing unproven drugs

https://www.vox.com/coronavirus-cov...ydroxychloroquine-ivermectin-trump-conspiracy

"Some Americans who are reluctant to get vaccinated believe they are living through a very different pandemic — one where the approved Covid-19 vaccines are ineffective and dangerous, and where a long list of “miracle cures,” ivermectin among them, are critical to patients’ health and safety.

“On the face of it, it doesn’t make sense that you don’t trust doctors and science, but then the next moment, you’re sharing news about some other medical cure and taking that and putting it in your body,” Jay Van Bavel, director of the Social Identity and Morality Lab at New York University, told me. “These are not trivial beliefs. These are some of the most significant decisions you can make in a once-in-a-century pandemic.”

“People listen to people ‘from their group’ and whom they think they can trust,” David Dunning, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, told me. “People really don’t know what science is, and so do you feel you can trust the person giving you advice, rather than appraising their expertise, becomes the thing.”

Why ivermectin fits into the anti-vaccine narrative

Ivermectin is the latest fad among hardened vaccine skeptics. But it is only one unproven treatment in a much longer line of alternative cures and “science” that has driven opposition to the mainstream consensus on masks, social distancing measures, and now the vaccines.

Early in the pandemic, this worldview held that Covid-19 wasn’t that serious of a threat to begin with, little more than the flu. Then it moved to existing drugs — hydroxychloroquine took an outsize place in this narrative — that meant the virus could be easily contained. At the same time, some Covid deniers came to believe that masks and social distancing restrictions were not only unnecessary but a power grab by the establishment, leading to protests at state capitols last spring."

Escaping the anti-vax conspiracy rabbit hole

https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-56762061

"Catherine grew up in a family that lived an alternative lifestyle. When social media became a big part of her life, she became a huge believer in anti-vaccine conspiracy theories.

She told the BBC’s specialist disinformation reporter Marianna Spring what made her question her beliefs, and her ideas on how others can be helped out of the online rabbit hole"

Escaping the anti-vax conspiracy rabbit hole

Nice, thoughtful video. It shows there's hope of escape for those falling down the tunnel.

Putin calls for faster vaccination as Russian COVID toll hits new daily record

MOSCOW, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia needed to speed up its vaccination campaign against COVID-19 as the country recorded its highest single-day death toll since the start of the pandemic.

Speaking to newly elected lawmakers, Putin urged them to actively support efforts to have more of the population vaccinated.

"Vaccination safeguards people from infection, from serious symptoms," Putin told lawmakers. "We need to increase its pace."

The Kremlin has blamed the rising case numbers on insufficient numbers of people getting inoculated. Russia was fast to develop and launch its Sputnik vaccine when the pandemic struck last year, but take-up has been slow, with many Russians citing distrust of the authorities and fear of new medical products.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said earlier on Tuesday that around a third of the population had been inoculated.

Russia reported 973 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, its highest single-day toll since the start of the pandemic, as well as 28,190 new infections. (more...)

Russia has one of the lowest vaccination rates of the world, just a 30% of its population is fully vaccinated.
Many people there seem not to trust their own vaccine too much. Also a lot of people believing in conspiracy theories there. Unfortunately it's not possible to fool a virus, and it will hit like a hammer where the vaccination rates are so low and where people believes it's just a hoax and don't use face masks and social distancing.
