Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has now been dubbed Comirnaty, which the company says represents a combination of the terms COVID-19, mRNA, community, and immunity.

I don't know about the rest of the vaccines, but Pfizer has been calling its vaccine Comirnaty from the begining of 2021.
Anyway its vaccine will still be called "Pfizer" or "Pfizer-Comirnaty" although its technical name its Comirnaty.
Also the US Trademark for "Comirnaty" was filled in June 1, 2020 and registered in April 6, 2021.
The European Trademark for "Comirnaty" was filled in May 30, 2020 and registered in October 07, 2020.

Covid crisis dramatically worsened global mental health, study finds

Cases of anxiety and depression around the world increased dramatically in 2020, researchers have found, with an estimated 76m extra cases of anxiety and 53m extra cases of major depressive disorder than would have been expected had Covid not struck.

The study is the latest to suggest the pandemic has taken a serious toll on mental health, and that women and young people are more likely to be affected than men or older people.

Went to get my flu shot the other day...the quad dose. After getting swabbed the pharmacist was looking at the paperwork and suddenly stopped. I asked what was wrong and he asked me if I knew the price...I said 'no' and he told me it would be $45. I've never paid more than 20. He confided that the cost for the chain was just under $5 per dose. I put my sleeve down and walked away.

Winter is coming. And so is the “twindemic” – a wave of influenza (flu) and a Delta variant-fueled surge of COVID-19, which are set to strike at the same time.

We asked Dean Blumberg, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, for his advice on how we can keep ourselves safe and healthy through the season.

Will this year’s flu season be different from last year’s flu season?
Last year, people were worried about a bad flu season on top of COVID, and it didn't happen because everybody was masking and social distancing. Many things were still closed because of lockdowns.

We had historically low rates of influenza and other respiratory virus transmission last year.

In fact, here at UC Davis Medical Center, we didn't have anybody admitted for influenza last year. In a normal year, somewhere between 40 and 150 kids die from influenza in the U.S., but last year, one child died from influenza. That just shows you how much the masking and social distancing really helped.

This year, things are much more open and we are already seeing the transmission of respiratory viruses like influenza in the community. So it's not going to be the same. People have lost a year in terms of being exposed to influenza and developing some sort of protective immunity.

We do expect a return to a more normal influenza season this year. It might be even worse because people have not been exposed to influenza recently. So I would really encourage everybody to get vaccinated for influenza this year. (more...)

Staff shortages plague hospitals as COVID patients fill half of Montana’s ICU beds

As COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations decline across the country, the pandemic in Montana has continued to get worse. The average number of hospitalizations grew by nearly 40% over the past month. Health care workers are trying to keep up, and some are pushing the state to do more to help.

Thirty-three-year-old Brandon Brigham says he wasn’t taking the pandemic seriously before he landed in the ICU at Billings Clinic.

“ Just didn’t think it was a big deal, hanging out at the bar, playing pool,” Brigham says.

Putin calls for faster vaccination as Russian COVID toll hits new daily record

MOSCOW, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that Russia needed to speed up its vaccination campaign against COVID-19 as the country recorded its highest single-day death toll since the start of the pandemic.

Speaking to newly elected lawmakers, Putin urged them to actively support efforts to have more of the population vaccinated.

"Vaccination safeguards people from infection, from serious symptoms," Putin told lawmakers. "We need to increase its pace."

The Kremlin has blamed the rising case numbers on insufficient numbers of people getting inoculated. Russia was fast to develop and launch its Sputnik vaccine when the pandemic struck last year, but take-up has been slow, with many Russians citing distrust of the authorities and fear of new medical products.

Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said earlier on Tuesday that around a third of the population had been inoculated.

Russia reported 973 coronavirus-related deaths on Tuesday, its highest single-day toll since the start of the pandemic, as well as 28,190 new infections. (more...)

Russia has one of the lowest vaccination rates of the world, just a 30% of its population is fully vaccinated.
Many people there seem not to trust their own vaccine too much. Also a lot of people believing in conspiracy theories there. Unfortunately it's not possible to fool a virus, and it will hit like a hammer where the vaccination rates are so low and where people believes it's just a hoax and don't use face masks and social distancing.
