I'm just past newbie status but this is pretty much a newbie question:

I've got a number of domains that I want to collect traffic stats for (simple stats like number of uniques per day filtering out robot traffic) but I don't want to put adverts on them.

What's the easiest free way to do this? The only way I can think of is to pay a hosting company and set them up there, as the companies usually provide stat counters.

Any suggestions?

www.google.com/analytics will give you a lot of great stats including mapping where the hits are coming from around the world, referring site, etc.

pretty easy to set up, you just sign up for an account and put a javascript snippet on a page (which can be blank if you don't have one).

Thanks, but won't I still need to pay somewhere to host the names so that I can put the google code on?

if you're not going to have any content (or very little content) on your sites, then just go with a free host. sure your stats might be off by a bit, if at all, but it's not like you're losing sales or anything ;)
