Can I transfer an expired domain from GoDaddy to Namecheap?

I have 13 domains that expired on 12/13/14 that are now in the godaddy 80 dollar redemption fee phase. I unlocked them under the expired tab and added them to namecheap. They tell me I can transfer them for a fee of 9.69 each. Two of these domains have bids but only one gives me the details:

REGISTRAR LOCK clientTransferProhibited epp#clientTransferProhibited

But they still let me add it to my cart. I know nothing about domains so I was wondering if this was a way to avoid the 80 dollar fee. I talked to go daddy twice and they are only willing to give me 50% off and not waive them like I have heard about in forums and on twitter.

My questions are once I transfer these 13 accounts will my "whois" still say they are from 12/13/08 or will that re-set somehow?

Also is it even possible to transfer because I just saw this on the namecheap website:

"Please note that regulations prohibit transferring a domain name which is less than 60 days old. Also, if your domain has expired with your previous registrar, you renewed it with them and then transferred to us within 45 days after that, the additional year will not be added. Other than that the time is added to the current expiration date of the domain."

And they say I need to renew with godaddy first so I'm confused.

What does anyone recommend I do to keep my domain age the same and renew them without paying 550-600 dollars. Thanks for any help on this matter.

try to transfer one domain - see what happens.

you need the transfer code and the name needs to be unlocked.
and you need to able to read emails sent to the whois contact

Thanks for the reply. I did unlock all 13 of them and do have the codes that got sent to my email on file. I just don't want to try this unless it's 100% going to work. I will attempt it if godaddy cant give me better than 50%. Has anyone else have any answers or suggestions.

The transfer will fail. Either registrar should be able to verify this.

GoDaddy has a non-guaranteed 18-day grace period for most gTLDs (e.g. for .COM, .NET, .ORG etc.). After the grace period for these extensions, the domain is dropped in 'redemption' period, and you cannot transfer it: you will need to recover the domain with GoDaddy. Only after the domain is renewed with them can you initiate the transfer.

"Two of these domains have bids." What does that mean? Are you actively selling these domains?

Godaddy puts them them in an auction after 26 days of so. So what would be my best option? Just buy them from godaddy at 50% off.

Oh, right. How long have you owned them? Are you sure they're worth the minimum $40 cost?

why the reluctance to try a transfer?

I've had these since since '08 and I would pay 20 each if godaddy is able to do that.

And I don't have money to burn and reading that link it seems I can't.

You are getting bad advice here. The transfers will not fail. GoDaddy allows you to transfer away domains right up to 42 days after expiry. Go to Domains>Expired Domains in the control panel, make sure they are unlocked. And put in the transfer requests at NameCheap. You better hurry.

well, not all of it was bad. ;)

deanmoney, since you won't listen to me, maybe you should listen to stub.

I was only going by what is stated on Namecheap's website, but you are saying it is untrue.

Sorry if I gave you bad advice. Good luck with the transfer, I do hope it works.

You were part of this discussion on another thread (see below). So am I correct, you have never personally transferred away a domain from GoDaddy that was past the 18-day grace period? I'm only asking because I still see a lot of conflicting information on the other thread, which was pretty recent.

Well here is one I found from the NameCheap website:
https://www.namecheap.com/support/k...can-i-transfer-an-expired-domain-from-godaddy

As it states there:

- The domain should show valid and up-to-date contact information in the Whois (primarily the Administrative contact email address);
- The domain has to be unlocked for transfer;
- You have EPP code/ Authorization code for the domain.
- The domain should be within reactivation grace period at GoDaddy.

Really not sure about particular GoDaddy policies but as far as I know domains in redemption cannot be transfered. Otherwise why have the redemption fee in the first place if you can just move your domains 40-50 days after they expire. :?

Nowhere in that thread have I said I've never transferred an expired domain away from GoDaddy. In fact I was the pioneer to report this was possible, in various threads here on NP. I have personally tested the boundaries, up to 42 days after expiry. And I would recommend you don't leave it later than 41days. Just to be on the safe side. Some domains 42 days after expiry didn't transfer for me. But I think that was because I didn't count the timezones correctly.

Yup I have transferred my expired domain after GD Expire auction completed.

I think it was 38days after expiry. Transferred to another registrar for $8.

@Rado_Ch - I think NameCheap are incorrect on the point you highlighted. GoDaddy allow you to transfer away up to 42 days after expiry, which I think is way past their reactivation period (at least at normal renewal rates). Besides you are at the wrong end of the spectrum, looking at NameCheap ToS. It doesn't matter a hoot what NameCheap's ToS says if GoDaddy allows you to transfer up to 42 days after expiry.

I would post you a link to GoDaddy, proving this except my internet connection has a problem at the moment and cannot reach the document. Perhaps somebody else could provide the link.

The OP should transfer their domains ASAP.

As long as GD allows you to unlock a domain and get a transfer code, you can still transfer the domain. I do it routinely and have transferred out many domains that GD would have charged $80 to renew.

I sure wish I had known this. For a long time though I've been very careful about not letting domains expire at least past the grace period. Apparently, countless people are paying $80 to GoDaddy to recover their names when they can just as easily pay under $10 (to another registrar) and move them out.

Can anyone at least verify that SOME registrars will not allow transfer of domains that have progressed into "Redemption Period"? Is GoDaddy unique or not unique at all?

Excellent point. It just so happens that Namecheap is about the first link to pop up when you query this on Google. Damn.
