I sometimes see an error page ("the page can not be displayed") have page rank of 1. Is this possible?

It is carried on from the last page you were visiting. It doesnt change when you get a 404 error until you visit another legit/working page. :talk:

just a note it could actually be possible for an error page to receive a pr even if it is an error page. If enough sites linked to the page it would get a pr. However I would assume that if the page sends the correct headers then google would not give it the pr.

say
you had a page called page.php ;)
and it was linked to by alot of high traffic domains
then yes, it would have a PR
but, when you visited it, it showed your 404 error page, while still being on page.php

if that make sense

Sure... it could have PR 5 or even higher if enough good sites linked to it.

An error page could ONLY have a PR if it was an actual page hosted on a server. I feel sorry for the person fixing the links on a PR8 404 error page

The error pages produced by the browser it's self cannot have PR
