PALM DESERT, Calif. — Just when you thought you'd heard it all, a New York company unveiled a new technology Wednesday that has to be seen to be believed: video ringtones.
You record your video greeting (with a webcam) at the Vringo.com website, send it to your phone, and tell your friends to sign up for it. When you call their cellphones, they'll see your video. The free service will open to the public by late March.
"Video greetings are a much better expression of who you are," says Vringo.com Vice President Benjamin Levy.
Vringo is just one of many companies here at the Demo conference, where such technologies as TiVo and Palm were first introduced. Many are trying to ride the burst of mash-ups between cellphones, social networking and video that has captured the world.
"This is the wave, and people are jumping on it," says David Card, an analyst at Jupitermedia. "Everyone's looking for the next gimmick."
Vringo's plan is to eventually also sell licensed content, such as snippets of movies, that people can use as their personal video greeting.
