I think .tv fans will want to read the new June Cover Story at DNJournal.com.
After you read what Dr. Chris Hartnett has to say about .tv I think he may become your new hero. :)

Here is the quote regarding .tv (as the article itself is quite long-though well worth the read!):

"Hartnett continues to add domains today and said he is mostly a value investor, looking to acquire names at prices that represent solid values in the current market.

Though he is basically a value investor Harnett also admits to speculating occasionally, most notably in the .tv extension where he is believed to be the largest private owner of .tv domains in the world. Hartnett owns or co-owns a total of 17,000 .tv names. On the co-owned domains Hartnett works with four partners, one in each of four different verticals.

"They produce almost no revenue whatsoever," Hartnett said, "but I am attracted to them for several reasons. TV, like the word "global" is the same in most widely used languages around the world so there is instant recognition. There is a convergence of computers and the television set and it is happening faster than anybody thought. I feel that text is going to be on .com while
visual content is going to settle more on .tv. Basically it just supplements and glorifies the existing website. If you have the .com and it is working well, having the .tv is only going to give it a deeper and more vertical integration. Would people rather read the story or watch it? I think ultimately they would rather watch it," Hartnett said.

"Why can't we have a .tv site for every product, so I can see a demonstration on how to use it instead of digging through a manual?," he asked. "Why can't we have one for every disease, so if I want to learn about ulcerative colitis I can sit there and watch a program about it? It is an educational thing that you can apply to almost every field. I think .tv is a great extension for that." "

what an honor in reading this ron-great write up and just finished...

richard, maybe you should email Dr. Chris Hartnett and show all the fun things qoof is up to you (assume you havent met him or talked to him yet)

i am very happy he mentions about products... showcase products in .tv format and video... i know geo names are the truly 1 but eccomerce and video showcasing products will be up there as well...

not sure if he does but it would be a huge honor if he does...

or maybe he is active but wont reveal his real name... i remember reading a thread on this a few weeks back about top domainers and people on namepros were wondering this and the discussion was formed why they would use there real names...

do you imagine all the pm messages they would get, lol....questions, comments, how to do this, how to do that, i have a business plan and i need money.. he seems like a very down to earth man and would be a huge asset if he can be in the .tv forum maybe once a month with a chat disccusion or something like that...

who knows, the great thing in being a forum i guess...there are a couple profile people on the boards that use there name.

17,000 x $30 = $510,000 in annual renewals (if all are non-premie)

Yeah, that's a lot of money indeed but when you are a Billionaire, 1/2 a mil ain't too much :)

I am sure out that 17,000 some thousand names that he has there is more then one name in there that will give him the annual renewal fee's easily.. especially in a few years to come.

Excellent article - not just regarding the .TV aspects of the story, but more the snippets of the subjects personal history that make the man who he has become.

As usual, an excellent piece of 'I Love My Job' journalism, although it did leave me wondering if any of our brothers and sisters here may be 'Big Chris'.

Perhaps we should have a vote on who it is most likely to be! My money is on Jeffoverman!!

Looking at this story from as many angles as possible, the introduction of this story into the wider domainer world is both a life and a death moment for our beloved extension.

The fact that such a prominent and patently successful man is investing so heavily in .TV will certainly help create that 'evaporation moment' in those who had their doubts about the extension - a fact so rightly noted by DreamsComeTrue.
Credibility and acceptance of .TV names will now be even more of a fact.

However, the fear element also looms. The fact that one very rich domainer is sweeping through our world in search of goodies and possibly bringing many thousands of followers with him may mean the organic growth of our extension (created by developers, media and creative types and their companies), means we may begin to lose a little of our increasingly respectable .TV lustre. Many here already were prepared for the long haul - now it seems the short-termers might be tempted to play. This opens the possibility of the .eu phenomena - where too many investors actually cheapened the extension.

Having thought about the possibilities and fears I personally am glad this story was written. If anything it shows that people who just 'forward think' have 'forward thunk' themselves to the way of thinking found on this great forum. (I'm still trying to get over the fact that even Snoop has 70 .tvs).

And, as Boboski so rightly noted, this might be the moment for some to stop selling cheap...... but if you do decide to do this, can you wait until next week to start so I can grab a few bargains!

Fabulous article! I suggest we all send a copy to our local media so they can see where the rich and famous are spending their money in a time of global recession.

My guess is that it could be no one but SNOOP as it sure fits the profile, and his having 71(code for 17000) domain names makes it even more suspicious. :bingo:

In the article he stated that he only buys from sellers who needs to sell(buy low) and he sells high, shooting for the sky.

Brilliant article :kickass:
I expect we will get a lot more new members or watcher in the .tv forum in the next few weeks as more & more domainers read this article and start looking into why suich a proven domainer is investing heavily on .tv's.

Re. renewal fees it's worth considering that if he is a billionaire he will be earning around 50 million dollars a year in interest alone fom his billion dollars - so 500K renewal fees means he will only be getting 49.5 million a year - which is around $1 million a week
