A few years ago there were some that liked to spread the narrative that apps would make domain names less valuable, possibly obsolete. There is not as much talk about that scenario over the last couple years. Josh Metnick forwarded me an article about how Lance Ng sees mobile apps actually becoming obsolete. From an article on Medium Ng writes: In the next three to seven years, I expect … [Read more...]

Native apps out, Progressive Web Apps (PWA) in...and PWA's need a domain!

Google is all in with Progressive Web Apps:

I'm basically ornery regardless, but I really can't stand apps. I have a handful on my phone.

Just now I tried looking into scoring some concert tickets, and immediately I was "hijacked" to download some lame app I have no need for. Nothing doing!

I'll cheer the day they disappear (hopefully for good).

I don't believe they will become obsolete. But we'll see more of those "progressive web apps", as has been mentioned.

And yes, Google is really loving them: https://squoosh.app

Why are manufacturers offering 6GB RAM and 128GB storage on mobile phones? Because we have to cram so many apps in the poor thing. Instead, PWA will run the "app" straight off the web, with only the browser cache being stored on the mobile device.

All I can say is that I love the concept... Not to mention I still rock an old-ish LG G3 with 2GB RAM. I'm cheap and too stubborn to upgrade. With PWA, after my next phone upgrade, I will not change it for a long time.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did become obsolete. Especially with the "ban everything" brigade that pressures companies to stop supporting certain apps because of their political views or w/e. At least (in the main) domains don't just get deleted by a company that doesn't like you.

Also, no company really wants to be at the mercy of Apple and Google. They don't want to submit their apps for approval every time they want to make a change to their own creations. It's a nightmare. Who are they to 'approve' or 'disapprove' something like an app that could just be served directly over the internet.

I work for a retailer who had an app. No one cared to use it, most people just use the mobile version of the site so they've turned it into a web view app. It's their website in an app. That will probably sit as it is indefinitely now and its use fade away completely. it's not the only company doing this.

That's exactly what I resent most about so-called "apps". It railroads you into either Google or Apple -- and really just one of those depending on your device (unless I'm missing something). Google primarily is a monster that has to be brought to its knees at some point, sooner the better.

Installing an app is something you always have to ponder carefully due to privacy and security issues. They are overrated.

I'm not a phone techie. I probably replace my phone when it's obsolete. I generally probably replace it every 4 years on average. And try to keep the purchase <$200. I have no idea how many apps I have on my phone. Most of them are put on as part of the system. But it seems to me all the memory is consumed by these apps. I think the development of PWA's is a welcome natural progression.
