The area is a major tourist location; it isn't the .com but then .al matches the state abbreviation.

So what do you think?

I love the idea. Someone recently bought up the top 10 Alabama cities in .AL

I would wait and see what happens with those larger city names before I tried to sell it. I guess this is worth a couple hundred bucks to the right person. Good luck!

Thanks. A few $100 is like 2-3 ads on a simple page for a local business in that city though. GulfShores has 15,000 hotel rooms and AL is the legitimate Alabama abbreviation.

"gulf shores al hotels" - Google Search
"gulf shores al homes" - Google Search

It's a quite popular place, so waiting would probably be best :)

People who like domain hacks will tell you its worth XXX but most will say reg fee.

I view hacks as a "cute" side show but an end user isn't going to pay for something like this. GL.

I think you have the definitions mixed up. c.ar is a domain hack. Car.ar is not.

Totally hard to value, I agree. With some Google luck it can be very lucrative.

I guess you are right on that. I view them similarly since the extension for .al has nothing to do with Alabama.

Either way, the name holds little value unless there is a gulf shores in albania.

To you as a person that knows domains. To an average person searching for a house, hotel or whatever there .al probably means Alabama if they even care to see the extension. They already know that gulfshores is in Alabama so .al seems familiar. Boston.ma, for example, with a "Boston Massachusetts" as a title makes it clear what the site is about.

Of course you don't have to be #1, get type-ins, or get 100% of the clicks to make a lot of money.

But, regardless, we're all speculating and I appreciate all comments.

Gulf Shores is a great town and gulfshores.al is exactly descriptive. Hack or not the dot is in the right place and it looks comfortably familiar to locals and visitors who would never dream of an Albanian connection. That's the good news. On the flip side, I can't find dot AL at bigdaddy. I googled 'register .al domain' and visited the #1 result:

Registrant must have a copy of the company registration in Albania and passport number of contact person. Starting from the day of the registration of a domain name the “possessor” is allowed 15 days to make any possible changes/corrections owing to a spelling mistake on a registered domain name or information regarding the contacts. After the above mentioned period, the request for changes/corrections of a domain name is considered as a request for a new registration, and as a result has to be accompanied by an application form for a new registration ... 2 years registration $198

That's a deal breaker for most prospective end users and makes it a hot potato in your pocket. If better terms are available, include that in your sales pitch. Good luck!

ecalc, we agree on how the locals and people wanting to go to Al see it. As long as it looks familiar, they will click it IMO. They see "Gulf Shores, Al" dozens of times a day, it's like second nature by now.

There is a much easier way to transfer it, via a local proxy and the renewals are less than $25 /year. You only need to be a citizen now, not a business and the process with what I've read is about to become automatic. They are some uncertainties ('how do I trust this proxy' etc) but I'll probably keep the name for a while anyway, unless...

I look at this very looong term, there's a lot to milk here year after year, unless BP has other plans :)

You don't have to be a citizen any longer. I own 12 .al domains and live in the US.

Technically you do but you registered them through a proxy.
