Hello NP.

I have this forum www.sustainabilityforum.com/forum and currently a pagerank of 0.

This forum has been online since the middle of January and has several good links going to it as well.

What am I doing wrong? Or what should I change to get a good pagerank?

I want to be in the first page of google with these two key words:

environment forum
environmental forum.

Any suggestions or tips?

Thanks.

Fabian

First, remember that pagerank (PR) and what page of Google's results you are on are two different things. A well optimised page can outrank other pages with higher PR (if that weren't true, then the results would be the same for every search). Yes, PR is good, but it shouldn't be your primary focus.

Second, that the Google Toolbar says that you have a PR of 0 doesn't mean you actually have a PR of 0. Toolbar PR is updated periodically, so is often several months out of date. If you have good links to your site, then you have PR.

That said, if you really want to get more PR, then the way to do it is to get more and better backlinks. Links are better if they are from pages with high PR, and on pages with few outbound links.

You can attract links by providing something of value (e.g. quality content, a useful tool, etc.), asking for them (e.g. submitting to directories, contacting webmasters with related sites and offering to exchange links), link-baiting (writing the kind of content that will get people talking about it on blogs), or buying them, among other things.

Backlinks is what you should concentrate on and try to build backlinks other then from Google Groups.
Also do have a look at the vbSEO forum which can help you greatly in optimizing your forum.

Page rank is only possible if you have Backlinks with page rank.

However, you don't need page rank to bring the keywords:

environment forum
environmental forum.

forward.
These keywords you mention, have near to no relevance at all within your site, so if you want optimise for these keywords, you need to make your site relevant.

Title tag, description tag, keywords tag need to be better optimised.
Adapt some of the category and forum names (but don't exagerate)

One thing, that would also be a great help, is to rename the url. Now it is:
www.sustainabilityforum.com/forum

why not make it i.e www.sustainabilityforum.com/environment_forum

That should cause an immediate boost.

The underscore "_" should be replaced with a hyphen "-" to have the effect you're referring to.
That would indeed then be a positive factor contributing to overall SERP rankings.

You're right, I was just giving a quite old fashioned example.

Agreed. I reg'd and setup alldomainparking.com 7 days ago, and for a while it was on the first page of google for keywords "domain parking autopilot", at the moment it's top of the second page.

Admittedly, the keywords are very specific, and the results are only around 51,000 but still, it's an example, new domain, new site, zero PR, and within top 2 pages.

I'm not saying there is any real comparison between those keywords and yours, as there are 232,000,000 results for your targeted keywords, but it is an example.

I notice your domain was the sponsored link for the keywords 'environment forum' (Not every search, but it was there), pls let us know how that works out for you....

Get some high PR links and your PR will increase.

This doesn't gives you traffic in all scenarios. So keyword research, onpage optimization and relevant linking will be other factors which might bring in traffic.

As the question is only for PR. Then you can get PR easliy even if you do a simple directory submission to 1000 directories.

Thanks guys for the brilliant tips.

I will change the url immediately and see waht happens.

On the directories: I was hesitent to submit the site to so many directories which are not directly relevant. Any suggestions or opinions?

Does anyone know when the next PR update is going to be?

PR is constantly updated (it's just the display in the toolbar that isn't).

Just get more links. That's the main thing you want to focus if you want to increase your site's PR.

Thanks for all the useful feedback NP.

I think I will go for vbSEO and see how that works.

Any experience with that anyone?

Hi.

I just wanted to let everyone know that our PR went fom 0 to 3 last night.

I wonder if that has something to do with vbSEO?

You already had this PR due to the links that you mentioned in your first post. All that has happened is that Google has updated its toolbar data, so that it now shows you the PR that you already had.
