Shopify is the most widely used e-commerce software. It is understandable that someone with a top notch domain would choose the industry standard because aside from periodic new features it also has great customer support.

Amazon, Ebay and Walmart aren't fancy either. People looking to shop don't need fancy, they just need to see products fast, search good, see good photos and have an easy time buying. I agree they could do a much better job on design but it's better they are live.
