Hi guys,

If any of you out there is planning to start a company in the domain industry, I recommend starting a company that checks if the domains are stolen.

The function of this company is to call up the owner at the WHOIS, and perhaps call up the previous owner of the domain and verify its not stolen.

With so many stolen domains these days, I believe this sort of company can make big money!!! You can even charge like $50 per domain check.
and I am sure many people who do x,xxx transactions will use this service to avoid being scammed!

So can somebody here please start a company like this ?
Thank you
Aaron

Why not just call up the # yourself and save $50?

hmmm the pricing could be adjusted to like $100 or whatever amount that is necessary.

As for calling myself, there are many more things that goes into checking a domain. Even some of the smartest members got scammed. So this company should provide a comprehensive report about the domain.

Carfax.com would be a good model to follow. You pay $25 to get unlimited number of car histories for 3 months. The car history includes accident etc. And there is a provision of purchasing buyback guarantee for an extra amount. If something is wrong in the report carfax would buy the car from you for the amount you paid.

Maybe you can customize it for domaining.

You would need something like title insurance, where you pay a % of domain value and are protected up to that amount, otherwise what good is a piece of paper that says blah, blah!
Of course that means deep pockets to finance it.

Andy, so far this idea seem to have a positive feedback, and looks to be in demand, I am sure out of almost half a million members here, 1 of you might be interested to start this.

Imagine getting $100 for a domain check, and assume 1 day you get 10 clients, that means $1000 a day, and $30,000 per month!

BIG MONEY guys!

I have actually thought about this before, but it's great you brought this up. I've been contemplating a number of ideas to bring about a new business that helps drop the insane number of scams going on in domain and website transactions.

Such a service should have a strong warranty policy and should provide a legal opinion about a domain. You need some clever etools for dn investigation in all aspects. To be reliable and effective it demands money at the very start and a skilled team. I dont believe one person could reliable check up even 1 domain/day just doing a hand work and provide an opinion on a decent level of credibility and warranty.

I agree although this idea could work it will take alot of planning and certainly a business insurance policy! not to mention a well thought out/in writing business plan.

good luck.

I formulated a plan with a friend of mine who's a serious programmer. I also thought of a script/program that I believe will be beneficial. I am going to talk to some of my colleagues and what not. I would love to see this be a beneficial pull for domainers alike.

There might be strict laws on who should give a "legal" opinion, depending on
that would-be company's jurisdiction.

OTOH, I believe a domainer started this site:

http://domaintheft.org

It's a possible starting point.

DomainTools.com already in a matter of speaking provides such a paid service via their Whois History tool - one can browse past whois for domains, and can also query what other domains a registrant owns based on various criteria, such as admin email address.

So examining whois / past history can already be relatively easily done.

However, to the best of my knowledge, there is no service that offers domain title insurance - that is provide a monetary guarantee that if a domain is later discovered "stolen", they cover the loss.

There's a good demand for such a service, but the legal / financial risks are huge ... it's not a business for one to even consider unless they have a lot of money to spend on covering all the angles - funding, licensing, legal, risk analysis, fraud, etc.

Ie. one of the many threats a domain title insurance company would have to watch out for is a registrant, likely in cohorts with another person, making it appear the domain is "stolen" when in reality it's not to collect the "insurance".

I was talking about professional service about stolen domains not just 'report sth' service. Could be a domainer but this service is really a basic one.
