Hi, I'm a newbie to the whole domain thing. The only thing I use domains for is to actually develop them into my own websites and forums.

But now I want to try to start to get into buying and selling them to make a profit. I have tons of questions, but right now I have two main ones.

How much are CCC.org domains worth? I don't know if this is what CCC means directly, but I'm talking about ones that have one number in them, because those are what seem to be currently available.

And how much is a 4 character .net domain worth if the letters mean absolutely nothing? Dyqu.net, for example. Possibly $xx, or something at least a little higher than the purchase cost? And if so, how long does it take to have value? I know this is a very newbish thing to say, and most newbies seem to think they can "get rich" over night, but if I can manage to get one of these .org or .net domains, do you think I could make anything at all from them right away? If not in the Marketplace on this forum (filled with experienced domainers), perhaps on eBay?

Lastly, is it good as a newbie to take a look at some of the available domains on deleted/expired/available websites and buy some that I think are good? Or is the reason they are listed on those websites because they don't have any value anyway?

Don't waste your time with crappy CCC.org domains or non-premium LLLL.net domains.

There are still plenty of all-premium LLLL.net domains you can buy for close to reg fee!

You can still buy decent CCC.net domains for a few bucks over reg fee also!

Expired domain sites can be very helpful, you can find two great sources in my sig.

Good Luck!

Ironically enough, the very first link in your signature is why I brought the topic up. I was looking at that site and wondered if any of those domains were good.

Do you know where I can find some decent CCC.net and LLLL.net domains, and perhaps how long I would have to wait to sell them? Also, do you think I could buy any for close to reg fee and sell for low $xxx?

Is there any value to L-L-L.net?

If you could buy name on Monday for $7 and sell it on Wednesday for $500 wed all be rich :)

Anyway for your questions, as of now many LLLL.nets are still available for reg. As for CCC.net they are worth nada, CCC.com are worth a good amount, but you will see CCC.net going for $5-$10 here on NP. As for L-L-L.nets, no current value.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

 Oh okay, well that's a friends site.

You can finds some really good deals on LLLL and CCC .net domains right here in the forum.

I'd say you'll have to wait at least 14 months to make a decent ROI

There are many nice L-L-L.net available, so only register/buy the best.

You can buy a domain for $.01 and sell it for $1k a year later, but it all depends on the domain, the market and many other variables.

So I can buy LLLL.net from people around the forum, but as of November 2007 they have all been registered, correct?

You can buy LLLL and CCC.nets around the forums here. LLLL.nets are not all registered, that is LLLL.com :)

Thank you.

Another question: Do you think domains listed in http://www.namepros.com/available-domain-names/ are of value? Or is that why they are there, because the people that find them don't buy them because they already know they are not worth anything. I see some available domains that I personally think are good (good to me would be $30+), but I really can't tell. What do you think?

It all depends. As the old saying goes "One mans trash, is another mans treasure" I would be very careful about what you buy, and what your buying it for. In other words, most domains that you find these days are only strong if developed, so search through the lists, and if you need further clarification specific names, post them here, and I as well as the other NP members, will be glad to help :)

Alright, thanks.

What is the general rule of thumb about registering domains that contain future/non-existent movie titles, video games, Apple products, and other stuff like that?

For example, say PlayStation4.com wasn't taken. Would it be a smart idea to buy that (probably back when we were still waiting for PlayStation 3 to come out)? Or something like Hancock2.com, again, obviously if it wasn't taken.

And I'm asking with legal issues aside. I'm just talking about the general idea of doing it so maybe the company offers to buy the domain from you. Didn't someone own iPhone.com before it even existed and Apple gave him loads for it?

Those are tough. If you look, Playstation10.com is gone. Now do you honestly believe that Sony is going to make 7 more models? And if so do you think they would stick with the same number pattern, instead of Playstation X or Y or Z or something?

Buying those types of names is largely speculation, and therefore very risky. I would advise not to buy them, but then again I cannot stop you :) Like I said previously. Look at those lists, and post some names in this thread that catch your eye, and I will do my best to help you rummage through them.

I really appreciate the quick and helpful responses. I'll take some that catch my eye and put them in here right now. Later I'll take a little more time going through the threads and post more. Right now I just want to see if I'm headed in the right direction.

arcticwire.com
browselot.com
bulkpictures.com
cashierbot.com
cheatvision.com
chewybits.com
cinemanights.com
cinnabarisland.com (Pokรฉmon)
civicpros.com
dessertappetizers.com
devilspy.com
digitalatitude.com
duritos.com (Get people from "Doritos"?)
fitpacks.com
greatsuppers.com
loungesnyc.com
lyricalwire.com
pixelworth.com
savefrance.com
trynine.com
warearth.com
warenemy.com
warenthusiast.com
warfuel.com

Looking at some of these after I posted I don't feel like they are that great. I could probably narrow the list down a lot more.

As of now, the only names I see that MIGHT be worthwhile, is cheatvision.com if it were developed into a cheats website or something of the sort. TryNine.com maybe as a golf website?

Like ive said in the past to many people. Names are what you make of them. If you bought those names today, your probally not going to sell in a month for profit. However if you develop those names into mini sites, and put a small amount of money into marketing, you might have a chance :)

That is essentially what I do. I learned a long time ago, that the domain market was not for me, for 2 reasons.

1. You need to have a good amount of money to invest, which I did not have at the time.
2. You get burned easily if you do not know what you are doing. (For example, if you hadnt posted this thread, and just gone out registering domains, you would most likely not get that $7 back.)

So for me now, after I have been working online for the past 3-4 years or so. I only buy names that I can develop a site with or that are short (LLL etc) if they are priced correctly.

Ok, thanks. This is not as easy as it looks, or as quick as I thought. :p

Im glad you were able to learn that BEFORE registering 10-20 domains, and being out $70-$140. But in any event, I would keep trying and looking for good names. Im on the forum all day every day, so dont hesitate to ask any questions :)

I own Apple-Forums.com, I bought it to actually develop a forum. But I don't think I am going to anymore. Do you think it is worth more than reg fee undeveloped?

Also, +Rep, something I should have done a while ago.

Thats a toss up. 90% of the users here including myself will tell you that you are asking for trouble with something like Apple-Forums. Apple is a massive company, and that domain poses obvious TM issues. I would recommend trying to sell it off, and get what you can. You could try ebay, as you will open it up to domainers that might not be aware of all the rules and regulations surrounding TM issues like this one.

Makes sense. I'll post an eBay auction later tonight so the auction ends in the eBay prime-time.

I found the site http://llly.net that seems to have a small list of valuable LLLL.com that are in the expiring process. I found one in particular that I would like to register. GoDaddy says it is "X Not Available" and the WhoIs info says it is pending deletion. Does that mean any second/minute/hour/day now it will come back? Is there any strategy to be the first to get it? Do you think there are other people like me that are waiting to get it faster than others? Or do you think no one even knows about it? Is refreshing the page what I have to do?

Well, it's not worth the lawsuit. ;)

I shall sell it on eBay to get it off my hands.

Have websites like AppleInsider and Mac Rumors contacted Apple for permission to use those names or something?
