Most of the alternatives to btc, I mean like the newer ones or ones that haven’t even emerged yet, will go to zero but if you pick the right one...whew hoooo!

I think domain is something which should be go up to 10x of there price anytime. where bitcoin going to be crashed or cracked by gov and central bank soon. If I was early domainer which started domaining back in 2000 then I don't even think to invest in bitcoin.

    Overall I see,

Domain :- Should be Hold as it's pure liquid with strong market and less risk.

Bitcoin:- Sell it when you think it's has reached it's maximum price.

Sure .. but not good ones worthy of 7-figure+ start-ups .. and more importantly .. they are so used to making quick money that they won't even have the time to search for one! ;)

And significant part of those startups is dying within few years... and then they even drop their domains.

Of course .. but there are still plenty of them who buy and value existing domains! Just because SOME people hand-reg for their business doesn't in any way mean that (great) domains are not a good investment.

In fact .. alot of those businesses who hand-reg'ed will likely rebrand at some point anyways .. and when they do .. they'll actually have more money to spend! ;)

Absolutely most startups are spending from regfee and no higher $10K per domain...
Just very minority of them are buying the domains for 5/6 figures.

AMAZING !!!! That's totally fine by me .. lol .. most of the domains I buy have been for well under $100 (majority even under $25) .. take a look at all the ones I've been grabbing cheap!

    https://www.namepros.com/threads/domains-you-won-at-auction-or-closeout-in-your-account.1050374/

Of all the domains I've listed in that thread there isn't more than one that I paid over $100 for (and it might might not even be one)! ;)

When I talk about $10K per domain... it means something strong and nice like CEX.IO
It is not about 2word domains.

I hate to shatter your ego but looking over that thread neither do I notice any domains that are necessarily worth much either. (The thread is long many different people posted domains there.) Most...one is as good as the other.... There might be 1/100 or 1/1000 winners always but the rest are the equivalent of the grinding poker player’s...grind.

Which the grind...let’s face it...nothing wrong with the grind, but it’s not easy to pick up gold off the ground.

By the way, there are two or three word domains that are worth a lot, and two or three word domains that are worth very little. A domain needn’t be one word to warrant a five figure price. And nothing wrong with a four figure price either, which many two or three word domains easily command that (and also...many, do not!).

Many people value a good 2 word .com more than a LLL .io .. in fact .. MOST start-ups would never even consider anything but a .com.

That being said .. you aren't even getting my original point above .. I couldn't care less about $10k sales .. those are for domains bought for $1000+ .. I'm much happier grabbing good solid domains for peanuts and reselling them for $2k-5k+ .. although 10k+ sales make most of the headlines .. the real actual volume in domaining is in the low 4-figure range.

@xynames ... So then why are any of you here at NamePros in the first place if you all don't think there's money in domains? lol ;)

I never said there is no money in crypto .. but that's a market play .. there's risk in holding the ball so to speak if ever prices do burst .. domaining is a work play for me .. meaning that above money, some of us invest time going through all the lists to find little gems at far under-value prices that others miss. Sure if I don't sell domains, I'll end up losing money .. but not nearly as much as I could on crypto.

Now .. where I agree 100% is if we had a time machine and I could go back a couple of years .. for sure I'd say invest in crypto .. but at today's prices there is a significant risk factor (IMO). I'd say there's a greater chance it goes up than down from here .. but there certainly is risk .. that's why I say it's a market play.

    .LY was also popular previously...
My friend even sold instant.ly for $32K to some startup...
Within few years this startup was closed... And nothing new and special here, it happens regularly with many startups...

If you looked at all the domains I have today which I have a couple thousand or so - if you know about calculus - it would be like a limit approaching zero as far as aquisitions dating back to 2002 versus acquisitions from today. Lots of acquisitions 15 years ago lessening to very few today.

Most of my inventory is old. Other than of course brokered domains which I pick up weekly, which even with those I try to broker only really good domains. Also I’m very patient and will not sell cheap. By cheap I mean merely - below what I calculate to be market value.

So what I’m getting at in a roundabout way is that it’d be tough to enter domaining today if one had a zero inventory and were just getting started.

I actually made no direct comment on whether bitcoin is a better investment today than domaining.

Again .. that's nothing but positive points for domaining .. I've sold a couple .co's at $xxxx .. my whole point is that there is money to be made in domains .. IF you're willing to put in the work .. AND .. IF you're able to find and buy good domains at under market value!

I'll agree that those 2 *IF's* are crucial .. and that likely more that 90% of the people here don't put the work in the lists .. or quite simply don't have the knack of finding good domains under value ... so maybe for those people neither is a good option ... lol

But the truth is .. that comparing crypto investment to domains isn't even a comparison that should be made in the first place .. both are 2 very different things .. with domaining you have much more control over your fate .. crypto is simply a market play. Neither is particularly wrong .. nor right .. more people have lost money in domains than crypto (as of today) .. but in the long run .. if you're doing it right .. then you can have a greater assurance of being in the plus in domains .. because for all we know .. this time tomorrow bitcoin could crash back down to $2000 .. and it won't be as a result of anything in your control.

What is your portfolio size, how many domains you maintain?

For portfolios under 500 domains domaining can be very profitable...
But when you own thousands domains - you see absolutely another reality...

p.s. Even Berkens shortened his portfolio to just ~3K domains (was sold to GoDaddy)... because profitability is surely trending down from year to year... And I'm sure on 99% - in favor of Crypto...
