It says enter maximum bid in there so I guess if he puts in a really high number he wants to pay the lowest he can so it starts him off low (minimum bid) and if somebody else places a bid and his max bid is higher than he is still the leader in it. It is just like ebay except I believe ebay shows if you anoter user bids even if they are auto out bidded.

Yes perfectly normal when an auction has a reserve, the bidder will keep upping their bid in the hope of hitting the reserve.Once it hits the reserve, then it will stop and their maximum bid will not be shown until someone else bids above the current bid.
