.info Are .INFO's worthless now?

Most of the .info promotions have already ended with a couple extended thru til December.. if you regged good names to begin with, I don't think the fact they're free initially affects their value. A good name is still a good name... if someone offered me sex.info at a good price, I wouldn't turn it down because he got it for free (example).

Right on. Totally agree. I definitely think .infos are gaining in popularity - in my experience particularly for keywords that fit the extension... like city names (you're finding info about that city right?), medical conditions, etc, along that line.

Unless the domain fits better with .info than it does .com. You know, tourist e.g. (and im not saying that the .info here is worth more!), then I think .infos are doomed.

Already had some neg reputation posted against me for a similar comment i made a while back on the same subject but hey, here goes! I think the marketing ploy of dropping all those free .infos on the market at the same time to encourage use of the extension was a sorry marketing move. For what this did was create a cycle effect of domain ownership and release. Devaluing the paid for .infos at the same time. The problem being that 000's of .infos will drop at the same time next year forcing the probable give away of another batch of .infos. This, in turn, creating an effect that cannot be broken and, as time goes by and the industry moves on, the .infos will be left worthless and floundering in the waves. No-one will buy and no-one will re-register.

I am seeing a lot of anti-spam blocklists adding ALL .info's to be blocked since the free giveaway. Why? Because a lot of spammers more than likely registered as many as they could and will now use them as throw away domains.

Hm, never thought of that...

As for the many info's that will be dropped next year tho... if they're good they will be snapped up again.. if not, it'll weed out the bad again.

The only problem I can see is how many were regged that didn't fit the ext at all.. that is bad karma!

If anything, I think that the .info extension has became more valuable because more people have them, and if you have a good one, you do the math! :tu:

As with any business anywhere in the world, it all boils down to 'supply and demand'. In short, the only reason why prices go up and prices go down.

Demand is low for this extension so you do the math!

Agreed. I think the free .info campaign is, in some way, detrimental to the health of the .info extension.

You are looking at this in THe U.S. only and .info is a worldwide tld. Germany alone will foster growth in this tld. If the names are good they will sell Boston.info is great freakysextalk.info sucks just like it does in .com. Good ones will sell and last time I checked buying something for $7 and sometimes free and selling for $200-$1,000 pretty good. Is there a $1,000,000 .info probably not. But I have regged .com 4 letter where a german or dutch company had the .de and .info and were not interested in the .com. This is a business without borders you cannot just base it on U.S. feedback. AND .info much better than .cc .ws.biz, maybe even .us I don't know hope .us comes on. One day after reggin goingbald.info I was offered $250 I think it pretty good fits the ext. More things fit .com so .info not in .com League but for right extension and think beyond your neighborhood pretty good. And lastly you got a free chance if you get nothing but some PPC you are up on the game.

I for one dont think of it as a USA only thing....

Domaindiscount24 (a german registrar) was offering free .infos way longer than anyone else. So how does this change things.

The extension had possibilities, right up until they gave them all away....

Anyone want my advice, sell them all now for a $1 a piece before they start droping like flies. Unless youve got tourist.info of course and then give it to me for, what shall we say, 25NB$$

Yes, they are all totally worthless... Just transfer them all to me and I'll take dispose of them for you. Especially 3 letter and single word, 3-letter, and generic names.

I stated Germany collieri because they do not consider them worthless and will registerover .com in a lot of instances same with Holland and other countries outside of North America. ANd good name swill always do ok good thing the person that just sold SkinCancer.info $3,000 ChamberOfCommerce.info $1,500 and Westfalia.info $1,200. Content.info $785.

something like asdffasdsfdhiosdfoisdfhio.info will be worth nothing just like fsdaifdiaioasdfjofasdjfsdjiofs.com

Maybe not that bad, but most of the ones reg in the free period weren't great. In my opnion this actually makes the good ones worth more

Good names will always have value, bad names will be a hard sell in any market. There are two schools of thought:

1. The shear number of free names registered has flooded the market with people selling them for almost nothing since they paid nothing, bringing the market down. However, remember that before these free names were registered, about a million of the best were already taken.

2. By just increasing the number of names taken in .info, the number of available names for registration is more scarce. Scarcity tends to raise prices when you can't find a name or good alternatives unregistered. Scarce coins and stamps are worth more than plentiful ones.

I think both have some effect. Good names are more scarce and will be more valuable. These will be wanted by end users paying retail prices. Wholesale sales (seller to seller) will be lower due to everyone's portfolios being full of potential sales and the mental note that somehow the other person may have gotten it free and would want less. In the scheme of things, if a name might be worth $600, does it really matter if the person paid $8.95 for it or got it for free? As for a cost difference it's only a matter of 1.5% of the selling price.

I have a lot of good names that make some of the newly found free ones look like junk. I have actually raised my prices on 3-letter infos and some generic one worders.

By good names, I mean usable, developable, generic ones that fit the intent of the TLD and that will get traffic such as these that I have for example:

healthplans.info
estateauctions.info
skilessons.info
bankaccount.info
autoprices.info
aquariums.info
homebaking.info
etc.
