I am not in the domaining business. I am planning to start a website on a specific subject. This subject is a 3 letter noun that I'd rather not disclose here. I'll call it xyz for purposes of this discussion. I'm trying to decide what premium domain name to purchase.

The current xyz.com site is parked and doing nothing, but I can't afford it.

I have the opportunity to purchase xyz.tv and xyzd.com. The xyzd.com domain name makes it sound like the past tense of xyz, so it is reasonable. Prices for these names are in the 4K-20k range.

The site will be primarily a video blogging site about xyz and will earn money through affiliate xyz programs, so the xyz.tv name sounds really good to me.

Which domain name would be most likely to rank higher on search engines for the xyz search term?

Thank you so much in advance for your advice.

I would lean more towards the .com if your intention is to make this into a major business. if you are just making a small hobby type site, it doesn't matter what you use.

ranking is based on content and quality - but you would have an edge with.com over TV.

What budget are you working with - $xx, $xxx, $x,xxx ?

My budget is $x,xxx, but I'm really looking for the best bang for my buck. As I see it, I have 3 choices:
1. Buy xyz.tv
2. Buy xyzd.com
3. Save a bunch of money and buy a brandable name

I'm just not sure which is worth more to search engines: xyz.tv or xyzd.com

Go for .com , it's worth it, especially if you have the budget

Thanks so much for your help. I'm actually really surprised by this. I would have thought that the exact name with a .tv would be better than the exact name with a "d" with a .com. I think they will be about the same price. So for example, eggd.com would be better than egg.tv when people search for "egg"?

google changed their algorithms - exact match does not hold the same value as before. as I mentioned before - content, quality and usage will get you better indexed. best practice is to use a name that is easy to say and remember.

try this.

google 'candy'

let me know what page candy . com is on. I think its on page 3

IMHO, #3 is your best option -- a cheap or hand reg. I can't see any of those domains worth $$$$ and beyond.

Google's algorithm no longer prefers exact match domains.

No matter what Google says, they give preference to their advertisers.

The Big Goog has definitely migrated to the dark side.

I too would go with the 3rd option even though I think it will be pretty hard to find a good brandable domain for a few dollars.
But as keyword rich domains are dead and will die even more in the near future it wouldn't be a smart move to start a new business with one of them
Good luck with whatever decision you will take!

I now see that the xyz was just an example, not your actual term.

Therefore, I wouldn't want to offer a suggestion like I did, simply because the actual domains may very well be worth x,xxx to xx,xxx.

Agh! Gotta read posts more carefully.

xyzd.com will be anywhere in XXXX since if you have said its true a past tense meaningful name will be great.
xyz.tv will be anywhere in XXX or XXXX

I will suggest if it makes meaning buy them all.

Xyzd? Is the "d" killed the name?

.tv? Your website focus on videos?

I would go for .co and .com.

Some 3 letters .com still cheap.

.com is one of the best domains , since google's priority search is .com

xyzd.com - get it started =) Plenty of internet startups started with a less-than-ideal name, then bought the one they wanted once they could afford it.
