At least 1 renewal period, as many buyers will wait to see if you renew, so 1+ years minimum.

And I'd talking true profit on your entire portfolio - total expenses on said portfolio, not "grease business" profit like "I bought a domain for $300 and I sold it for $450 - profitzzzz!!!"

It took two years to sell my first domain name. I was just registering for the first year; and it took me less than one year to start making money on my first developed domain name site through ads people click and then buy stuff. It's time consuming to learn but it does work if you go all the way.

Just buy more names like everyone never notice.

If you understand good principles of what a good domain is, buy at the right price, with the budget, the patience ...you've won over half the battle

I don't remember. I must be too old :)
I think it took 2-3 years in 90's.
Everything is easier in the past.

It is all about what holding now. As could have sold off best. I wouldn't let it concern how long it took another. Some ducks just take to water.

My domaining became profitable the very first year, partly because of namePros and all of its members!

thanks for the votes,

the vote result tends to read as - either you start making a profit in year 1 or you'll never do :wideyed: but most probably, the answers are biased.
as to me, I am fully re-investing my yields into my portfolio hence my returns are almost zero over the year whilst having a portfolio growth about 25-30% over year.

I’m pretty sure over the last 20 years my domain names have always paid for themselves; but most of my money came from niche web site revenue streams that I built around the flooring industry.

That is, until about ten years ago when my flooring site rankings were systematically attacked by a negative SEO Russian porno link attack.

The only thing trolls learned from Panda, was that you could destroy other people’s rankings by doing things that caused Google’s automatic red flag penalties to kick in and push your sites into becoming delisted and canceled.

Gradually, all my flooring web sites would suddenly get link traffic from Russian porno sites, and one by one, each flooring site’s Google rankings disappeared.

Ten years of work building an honest business, and my million dollar company was laid to waste by Russian porno sites linking to me.

But my domain name sales were the winners every year; that is what got me through school 20 years ago and keeps me smiling today!

My advice, don’t buy a lot of names to say you have 100 names, I know it’s tempting just to have some irons in the fire, but go for great sounding or spelling names.

Nice poll.

Wow. If not for the fact that they ruined a good man you almost have to respect the ingenuity...

But who did it? Competitors?

Don't want to change the focus of this thread, so here's a little response and then I'm off this topic.

Getting justice, I suppose looking for a pattern of ownership within one of my disavow file attempts with google might shed some light; might do the domain name community some good to drag the sleeze onto the carpet.

I bet the government can see who owned all those sites, or who was discussing my flooring web site names. I bet the government could see my next targeted web site name being discussed, and then a few days latter watching maze links being slipped into their porno mix.

Maybe a competitor, maybe someone with a grudge, maybe someone who builds Russian porno web sites that couldn't beat me at something else.

Some things you're just gonna have to wait for heaven before you get the real explanation. Win some loose some.

They know who they are, and they have to carry that weight!!!

But I am thankful for getting into domains, drop-shipping, site development; you don't have to lie/cheat and scam online to earn a living, you just need to find what other people want, find a low cost supplier, and make it available for purchase.

And great domain names will always have some kind of value. The dropping lists are your low cost suppliers, find something great, then build your own custom holding page, find something to sell on the page, use the organic traffic to power you!!!

Tough question.
I do sell domains, but I turn down most of the offers for my current domains(either counter offer or ignore low ball offers).
I did counter offer 6 figures offer and never heard of the buyer again(buyer's offer was $250K and I countered $350K), though only 3 weeks have passed so maybe he will be convinced to pay more in the end.

I will be in profit once I sell again, especially since my ROI will be very high(was quite lucky in buying the domains cheaply), the domain I get 6 figures offers was bought at approx. $39).
Currently, it is mainly HODL and an occasional negotiation.
