I followed a few logo making contests on NP some time back.
And there was a live contest for a Lodge logo and what I found was that the name was still available. Immediately that sight ran like a thunderbolt down my spine. Goooo get it.

Wait... Something within stopped my hand and some supernatural powers pulled back my fingers from the touchpad.

Me- Why would someone run a paid Logo making contest and didn't register .COM for his business?
Second Me- May be it's a small Lodge somewhere in outskirts and may only need a road side Logo..
Me- Should I register the .COM
Second Me- What would you do with specific name of a small Lodge if the business owner don't need a website.
Me- Can I sell it somewhere else in that case?
Second Me- Kidding?

And I left it for the unseen powers to decide my fate.
I kept coming back for 2 days and the name was still available.
Curious.. Third day... THE NAME WAS REGISTERED.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

And the logo contest got over. A winner was declared.
The selected logo was displayed full page stating COMING SOON... on the .COM page the very next day.

I Missed an opportunity.
I though so...

Now a few months later, I think if that was ethical or not.
I didn't get an earning opportunity there, but if did; would it have been ethical to grab someone's name who you know will pay you or change his business name and logo but won't have any other option.
I mean registering a domain before finalizing a business name and logo is a wise step, but if someone missed on that, is it really a decent business practice to get him under your tent on your conditions.
I don't know...

Why I penned it down today.
Don't know how, out of curiosity I went to the same page and now the website and the Lodge is functional.
Beautiful pictures, a great lodge, green surroundings, a good website... and a HAPPY OWNER.

May God be with everyone.

What's the website? The logo? Who?

Are you upset about something that you missed out on? Even though you didn't have a hand in it. You just followed the action and watched it play out

I was upset when it happened.
Not anymore. It it's for me, it will find a way.

I was confused.
You know the name. Was it good for anything if this person drops it? Surely not.
What would you have done? Just asking...

If I didn't create the website, create the logo, create the business plan, or have any real input in whatever the "thing" is that contributed to its success, then I don't really have a leg to stand on ...I'm just an observer. It sounds like you're an observer

1.) I am not sure why a contest was put up without the .COM being regged.

2.) It was not much of a opportunity as there is (1) potential end user, a small company.

3.) Since the domain really has no generic value, it would kind of be a douchey thing to do.

Absolutely...
I don't regret now. Though the day when the name was registered, I felt I dropped something that was in hand for sure...
But to be honest, I wasn't sure... Like how you said it.
Move on.

The logo contest went live on 11th Feb 2021 and they registered the name on 23rd Feb 2021.
I was on 'Add to Cart' and 'Make Payment' buttons multiple times during this time interval but didn't complete the payment.
Was it really an opportunity or not?
Leave it.. :)

I don't think you missed out on much.

It looks like a small mom and pop operation.

These businesses advertise via trivago, hotels, bookings and SM platforms.

The website probably doesn't bring in much business for them, and if anyone did register a name, they would have simply chosen another similar name for reg value.

You did the right thing, and everything Craig said.

An additional gentlemanly thing to have done, particularly for a fellow NP'r, is given them a friendly PM that the domain was on your radar, thus could be on others as well.

It's actually quite a nice domain name for the business.

Humanity comes for no cost.
Humans try to make some out of it.
Its the story now facing north.
Had it been like I made something out of it, Probably the story would have faced south and I might have left a post stating "Opportunity encashed". May be, may be not. :)

But I believe what happens, happens for good. Not to regret.
Happy ending. Sweet memories.
:)
