Okay, I know this all may sound a bit strange, but I'm trying to figure something out.

So, Dave Shaw was a scuba diver that passed away in an attempt to recover the body of a scuba diver that had also died 10 years earlier. It is an extremely sad, tragic story.

I found out about him after stumbling upon this video:
scuba, cave diving ''The Big Black'' The last dive of David Shaw 21 43, XviD format - YouTube

In the video, they mention he has his own site called "deepcave.com", cool domain, I checked it out thinking it surely would be a landing page or just not found, but to my surprise, is it the same site they featured in the video, he even has a page dedicated to the body recovery that he was going to attempt and said to stay tuned for more updates on it, it's like a frozen time machine looks like he was updating it somewhat frequently up until his death.

So Dave passed in 2005, that was 16 years ago... How is this site still online?

I can only think, that he either paid for like 20 years of hosting, someone is keeping the site up in remembrance, or his hosting company that has stayed in business this long just has archived his hosting and there was an issue...

Any answers???

Family and friends most likely. He prob had a will. Sometimes if person plans ahead they have an "estate".

http://nissan.com/ is still live and the owner passed away, the family possibly continues to maintain what he was very supportive of.

The domain name is currently registered until 2025.

One can, as I understand it, register a domain name for a maximum of 10 years in future according to ICANN regulations.

Therefore, it seems most likely, as @xdomainer suggested, that family or friends have paid renewals and kept site alive as a tribute to him. Or possibly he had a clause in will to keep it active from his estate.

A tragic story. I suspect there are more cases than we might think of people keeping a site live out of respect for someone. I have stumbled on a few over the years, usually with some statement to that effect.

He was pretty young to have a will, although he was also a pilot so it could make sense...

I was just curious, seemed strange that a person who passed away 15+ Years ago still had an active webpage.

Plus it is a pretty neat domain for cave divers or a forum / blog about it.

It just might be comforting for a loved one to save the site like a photo likely affordable.

This documentary released in 2020 is well worth watching. I am confident the site will be around for many years to come.

Dave Not Coming Back is a Canadian documentary film, directed by Jonah Malak and released in 2020. The film centres on diver Dave Shaw's death while attempting to recover the body of Deon Dreyer from the submerged Boesmansgat cave in 2005
