Following the quarterly release of Facebook’s earnings numbers where the company’s CFO takes time to walk through the nitty gritty of the company’s financials, CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a moment to zoom out and wax on the company’s future goals, specifically calling out his ambitions to turn Facebook into “a metaverse company.”
“I wanted to discuss this now so that you can see the future that we’re working towards and how our major initiatives across the company are going to map to that,” Zuckerberg said on the call. “What is the metaverse? It’s a virtual environment where you can be present with people in digital spaces. You can kind of think of this as an embodied internet that you’re inside of rather than just looking at.”

There is going to be a digital universe and people are going to need to be bombarded with ads within it.

I purchased an Oculus VR headset from Facebook and while it's certainly cool and works pretty well with games, I couldn't wear it for more than about 30 to 45 minutes at the most without wanting to take it off. You start to feel nautious after a while. I could probably watch an episode of a TV show with it but a whole movie? nope.

So it was a waste of money?

I honestly haven’t used my Oculus Quest for many months now, so in my personal experience, yes I wasted like $400 lol

VR and Oculus are still a hard sell for the mainstream and I suspect will be until they get rid of the way it makes people flu-ish or should I say-sick-ish? I think VR will evolve into bigger and better things besides gaming but it certainly is taking a long time like so many other new technologies.

I had the original VFX-1 headset back in the nineties. Same issues, plus eye strain due to low graphic resolution.

Given that this is still an issue 25 years later with higher resolution headsets, I suspect that the queasiness is an inherent symptom of being in a virtual environment.

I don't think it will be resolved.
