Hi all, just wanted to run this by someone else as I've exhausted the goodwill of my spouse when talking about domain names. I am a web developer, making a family of community sites that have a naming pattern of ending in -wise. The sites have different focuses, the one under consideration here is going to be something like a cross between twitter and reddit. I'm trying to think up a good name. I thought this place might be a good place to get opinions about names. That's all I'm after, what you think of the name. I'm not buying or selling domains, the name I choose will be used to make a real website.

So, to cut to the chase: bleepwise.com, versus beepwise.com. I currently own both. I like bleepwise, but bleep.com is already in use by a British company dealing with records and bands. I like bleep because it could be used like "tweet", i.e. a verb "bleep this out", broadcast it. However on the downside, it's not a real word. Some might have problem with the 'l', not hear it properly or mispell it. Beepwise, on the other hand, is a more common word, beep, so that is both good and bad. On the plus side, it has a pleasant symmetry to it - the 'b' is the inverse of the 'p', with two 'e's in the middle. It looks good. And, I don't think there are any major marks that endanger its use. It's a common word. But on the downside... it's a common word, and maybe not one that has the same ring to it when you use it as a verb - "beep this out" sounds somehow not as good as "bleeping something". I don't know.

I'm not wedded to either one, really. They are just two that were available (bleepwise.com and beepwise.com, plus the .org and .net, which I habitually also like to have if I'm buying a .com).

I also have been playing with broadcastwise.com, which is definitely more unwieldy/cumbersome in the mouth when you say it (more syllables), but on the other hand it is a real word that connotes what the site will actually be about (sharing links, broadcasting videos, etc). Different approach.

What do you think of these names? Just how they hit you. Any feedback welcomed. Thanks!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
I mean, if it gained traction like a multi million dollar site does then the name might catch on. I honestly am not fond of either one. Plus, Twitter is one of few that you can call something a post a different word than a "post" and people will still understand. I don't think you should base the name off of what you want the term "posting feed" to be nicknamed on your site. Might be able to get away with making up a name for a Social Media site, Twitter and Zynga aren't real words. You got this man. Whatever you choose don't give up.

I wouldn't connect the word "wise" with either of the words. To be wise is to have or show experience, knowledge, and good judgement ...just doesn't hit me right, personally (with bleep / beep / broadcast)

Of the options I would say "Beep Wise" sounds better though I don't really like either honestly.

I would try either a made up brand or a shortened variation of these like Beeply, Bleeply...those types.

Hi all, thanks very much for the feedback, much appreciated. Maybe giving some more perspective will help here. I'll talk about my other sites, but I'm not trying to self-promote. I won't post any links, just assume the .com. My sites don't run ads at all, they are based on voluntary donations from the users, so there's really no reason for me to be spamming anybody. I just love talking about names, that's all. It's fascinating to me, but kind of drives my wife nuts.

I've been programming since 1982, and developing for the Web since 1995. In 1998 I quit my job and rode a bicycle across the country, an epic experience which I turned into an online journal in 2000, called "crazyguyonabike". I chose that name because even back then when I looked for obvious and "reasonable" .com names like "bicycletour", they were all gone. So, just as a kind of joke, I chose the longest, most unwieldy name I could think of, which was crazyguyonabike. At first it was just my journal, but, being a programmer, I didn't want to write 100 html pages by hand, so I decided to make a database and do it using templates. Of course then when it was up it occurred to me that it wouldn't be difficult to expand it to let other people put their bicycle tour journals up too. So I did that, and to my surprise it grew fast. I added other features like forums, classifieds, resources etc and over the years it just kept growing. Now there's more than 15,000 journals and articles, and over three million pics.

I decided to try expanding the site into other topics outside of bicycle touring, since I thought the same format could work for many different types of community. However I wanted to keep crazyguyonabike focused on bicycle touring, since I felt that was its strength - the focus. Eventually I came up with topicwise as a name for that, using "wise" in the context of "forming adjectives and adverbs of manner or respect such as clockwise, otherwise", or "with respect to; concerning" (from the dictionary). So, kind of like "regarding different topics", rather than the other meaning, as in owl or smart. I had the initial idea to make it very easy to implement this, simply by using subdomains to denote the topic, and then switching database based on the subdomain. It meant very little changes to my code, since I could still assume everything was in the current db, except for the db selection at the start of the request.

Then I came up with more ideas: Townwise, where it's similarly delineated into topics, but the topics are based around locales, or towns. So, geographically oriented. This fit the "wise" idea in terms of "different ways of looking at something", facets, because the two sites would share a user directory, you only have to register once, and then stuff could be cross-posted between the two. So, for example, if a journal goes through a particular town, then that journal entry might get cross-posted to that town in Townwise.

Then I went further, thinking about how I had subject-based, locale-based, what else is there, well, there's people. Eventually I came up with profilewise (not a name I loved, at first, but it grew on me over time). Profilewise is all about different profiles that you can post, about yourself, a club, company, group, dating profile, job profile, etc. Different types of page, basically. All about whatever you want, about you or your thing. Kind of like Facebook, I guess. And Townwise is kind of like craigslist in concept. And topicwise is something that could include reference articles, or a wiki section, so kind of like wikipedia in some ways.

Ok, so that's topicwise, townwise, profilewise - what, where, who. Then I started thinking about other possible ways of slicing the pie, and came up with searchwise, a way of searching both the different sites, and also the Web. Searchwise will take on Google where it hurts. My idea is that I can leverage the community that will grow between the different wise sites, and allow people to make their own lists of websites that they like to search for different purposes. For example, you might make a list of domain name forums, or programming forums, or recipe sites, or news sites, or whatever. Lists of sites to include when doing a search. This way, your searches can be much more specific, excluding all the spam. And users could publish their lists, and become known for being experts in certain areas, and others could utilize or subscribe to those lists. I think it could be a cool way to improve search, by excluding all the noise and junk. I'd have to write a search crawler and implement all the usual search engine stuff, but I think it would be a fun project, and maybe a cool thing to do. Different way of doing searching, based on serving the user rather than trying to deceive people into clicking on ads.

Anyway... so then I started thinking about reddit and twitter, and how compelling those are in terms of finding out what's going on "right now". It's compulsive, and it fills in the "when" part of the "who, what, where, when, why". When? Now. What's happening now. Microblogging, combined with the nice upvote/downvote/comment structure that reddit used to express (I liked their original design, new one, not so much). So that's where I was coming from with bleepwise, beepwise, broadcastwise. It's something expressing the fast-moving, dopamine hit aspect of the Web as we see it now in twitter. I was already taking on Facebook and Google, Wikipedia and Craigslist, so why not, lol. I don't care, I know how to do this, it's a big project, but whatever. I know how to do this stuff. I just like to hang it all off a good name, that's all, and I enjoy trying to think of a good name for the different parts of the thing.

One thing that occurred to me is that bleepwise (or whatever) is breaking the pattern of topicwise, townwise, profilewise. Those first three are different perspectives on the same pie - topics, locales, people. Bleeps isn't the same thing; it's more like something that might be a feature under each of those first three, like forums, classifieds, journals... bleeps. So there's that. Maybe it doesn't deserve its own site (and name). Then again, it does fill in the "when" of "who, what, where, when, why". There is a compelling feel to having a fast moving firehose of microblogs and comments. It's a different format from the long-form forums, like this one. Different experience.

Sorry to drone on, I hope I haven't turned everybody off, I tend to do that. My apologies. I just thought giving some context to where I'm coming from here might help inform the discussion about names like bleepwise etc. I'm open to them sucking, like I said they don't really fit into the first three anyway, maybe the bleep concept should be more of just a feature under the other sites. So you can see bleeps under hiking, or for your town, or subscribe to what a certain person is saying under profilewise.

If I haven't lost you already with this wall o text, I'd appreciate any further feedback. Thanks again.

@notabot Thats a hell of an explanation lol. I appreciate you taking the time in typing that out

Searchwise is very nice. I go back to what I said about "to have or show experience, knowledge, and good judgement" ...search is fitting

Search, car, insurance, home, rent, buy, source, health, travel, energy, trade, money, pay, save, spend ...

...big words, big industry and words of real significance. Each of these words can gel well with a "wise" business, aimed at "having or showing experience, knowledge and good judgement" in what they're doing. Overall, they fit and look attractive

Couple other ideas I'm knocking around...

Instead of bleepwise, beepwise, broadcastwise, how about blogwise? That is an easy to remember name, and it kind of connotes the idea of "broadcasting", or another way of talking about "tweeting" etc, basically you are posting entries that can be followed by people. That's a blog. Could be a video, audio, text, whatever, everybody understands the concept of the blog. And what are tweets, but microblogs? Same with reddit. So, possible alternative? The .com is taken but I'm reaching out to the owner to see if they are willing to part with it.

Also, instead of profilewise, how about pagewise? Again the .com is taken, but the website is "under construction" so you never know - I'm also reaching out to them. I still like profilewise, since it really does describe what I want there - people can post profiles for themselves, their club, company, dating profile, job profile etc. It does work, I think, but something in the back of my mind just doesn't jibe with the word "profile". It has slightly negative connotations now with regard to things like "racial profiling", and being profiled by online tech giants like Google and Facebook, people associate that with loss of privacy etc... perhaps. Or maybe not. I don't know. So pagewise is another easy to remember name that also says something similar - you can make pages on whatever, which could include the idea of profiles, plus other random stuff.

What do you think? Blogwise (for bleepwise), pagewise (for profilewise). Thanks again. It's good to have somewhere to sound off about these ideas, because it really helps to "masticate" the idea by talking about it. I find if something is easy to describe, easy to talk about, then it's maybe on the right track. If it takes a lot of explaining and pursuading, then it's not necessarily wrong (I mean, people probably thought twitter was silly at one time, and yahoo, and google) but maybe it could use some more thought. I know just about anything can be made to work, if the website is good then people will get used to just about anything (turns out my users love the name crazyguyonabike, they tell me it's easy to remember and distinctive, so go figure, lol). But finding the perfect name is kind of a fun game, and satisfying when you get that feeling that it's "right". Kind of like hitting the tennis ball in the exact middle of the racket, know what I mean? Ok, everybody tells me I overthink this stuff... :P

Blogwise / pagewise: A "wise" orientated business with regards to blogging / web pages ...I'm going to say they're ok

Compared to: A "wise" orientated business with regards to cars, insurance, homes, renting, buying, sourcing, health, travel, energy, trade, paying, saving, spending ...wise deals, products, services, advice, quotes and more associated with these things

The scope is wider with the latter examples

My opinion is that it's not a good idea to match an artificial word (beep, bleep) with a real one (wise). It's just not a nice marriage, it does not sound fluid nor esthetically appealing.

You have Twitter, right? It's a brandable word from the beginning.
Then you have TransferWise, for example (now they are just Wise, actually), but here you can see two real words.

I actually wouldn't mind at all if you posted a link to your website, that would be a much faster way to understand what it's about. You explaining, and no one here will think it's spam, no worries about it.
But from what I see now, I'd go with something brandable, for sure.
