The day is already off to a hot start as DomainHacks.com reported to Namebio the sale of B.et for $100,000. In my opinion one of the best domain hacks possible. Now I have a great interest in gaming, betting, casino related domain names and activities so some might disagree. But I think it’s a great […]

Congrats @DomainHacks.com

I have notice that you choose Sedo rather than Flippa this time.

What was the reserve that you have set on the auction?

Thanks

In my opinion one of the best domain hacks possible.

It's not just about the phrase or word that's being spelled out, you also need to be looking at the jurisdiction of the domain.

In this case, it's Ethiopia; one of the poorest countries on Earth. They have no domain registry, so how is it that .et domains can even be legally registered, let alone resold!.. I'd be curious to know the answer to that. As for the ip laws over there, I think you will find that it is nothing short of chaos, and if the name is ever arbitrarily taken (or deleted) I doubt there's anything the registrant could even do about it.

Your "best" is my worst, i'm sorry to say, and it's the new buyer that I truly feel sorry for...

Ethio Telecom manages the .et extension and you can visit them here, https://myportal.ethiotelecom.et/ to purchase one. Here is an official reference: https://www.iana.org/domains/root/db .
You could have at least looked up the Wikipedia page on .ET domains, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.et
The extension was established in 1995, apparently. First you doubted if the bid on b.et was even real and now you're coming up with more rants hehe! The whole point of this new profile seems to be to rant about a ccTLD and some other sales. O_o
I'm confused as to where you looked this up. It is amusing that you feel a ccTLD could exist without a registry or any legality. I'd like to float my own ccTLD in that case!

Ethio Telecom is a telecoms company, and not a registry. Now, without making all the "asides", and the erroneous suppositions about my character (because you don't want to confront the truth), just tell me the domain registry web address... I'll wait...

It is a government-owned company. Plenty of ccTLDs are managed by organizations/companies owned by those countries. Look up the link I provided and do your own research.

It doesn't matter if they open up stake in the company. Read here about how IANA formulates criterion for ccTLDs, https://www.iana.org/help/cctld-delegation-answers . As long as governments approve the company as acting on its behalf, it is acceptable. Furthermore, Ethio Telecom acts as the registry just like a host of other organizations and companies provide similar service in other countries. Yes, mostly smaller countries take that route. For instance, a land-locked country called, San Marino uses Telecom Italia (TIM group) as the operator for .sm domains. I can come up with other instances where companies or even universities etc. look after the functioning of a ccTLD.

The contract is available when you go and try to purchase any .et domain from Ethio Telecom. Finally, each ccTLD ultimately is governed in accordance with the country's government. That is no surprise. If Spain can take back a .es domain for emergency use (coronavirus.es), I don't think any ccTLD will not have conditions that allow them to take back a domain. And yes, your rights usually always are limited to fighting in that country's courts.

There are registries which have earned bad reputation, like .ag domains took back a bunch of their single-letter domains. However, you have not cited one instance of a .et domain being wrongfully taken back by the registry and are purely speculating. All ccTLDs come with risks based on the country.

Killer hack. Congrats to everyone involved.

Richard, have you tried contacting Ethio Telecom to inform them that they aren't the registry for the .et ccTLD? I'm sure they'd be interested in knowing this..

Ok, thanks for replying. I won't push this any further - there's no point... And, believe me, I sorely wish I could be congratulating the buyer on their purchase right now, along with encouraging all .et holders that a new milestone has been reached, but I just can't do that... It would be so silly.

There's no point replying to your silliness, Hotkey....

Thanks everyone. It's great news for domain hackers all around and .et which is a beautiful extension (and a beautiful country) and potentially the next big ccTLD (.et = space exploration).

For the info until December of last year Sedo didn't allow the selling of .et domains (only parking) but our team managed to persuade them on how worthy the Ethiopian extension is. They listened. Six months later we closed a $100K sale.
The year is 2021 and it's time to give up on the idea of "obscure extensions" which in many cases equals prejudice. Someone had to say it.

The internet is large and there is space for everybody.

@ Richard you are getting a lot of things wrong but I will be happy to discuss things with you via DM.

You won't be discussing anything with me ever again, Max. This sale sickens me...

sickens me only if name isnt used & shell 100k

That’s the teller, and makes me doubter.

Time will tell; $100K isnt chump change;
B.et you this is the greatest domain “hack” lol.

edit to add; as of now it re-directs to “bet.me”
re-direct away from it? Not exactly donning it… But it’s an operation. we’ll see how long lasts.

It's good to see a cool name like b.et being used to promote a developed website. Better for the domain name industry than just a blank page or for sale sign imo. Well done @DomainHacks.com.
