Hello mates. The vast majority of UK companies have .co.uk or .uk extension on their websites. Okey. I fully understand that. But how much possible is to have interest to add the .com version as additional asset? Even if they didn't use the .com as their main domain, wouldn't be useful to own it for traffic or defensive acquisition purposes?

Depends on if they're international or want to do business internationally. If they're solely focused on the UK, then the company will usually be satisfied with the .co.uk or .uk as those are the main TLDs locally.

What you mentioned is very right. But i think the selling point of .com is the fact that gives the chance to any company to grow having international business at future. Realistically, not every company will have global business. It's impossible. But again, i noticed that especially UK and DE companies are very focused on their local cctlds.

It makes sense for UK businesses to own their brand name in .com for many reasons. Most importantly the .com can be used for INTERNATIONAL trade, REDIRECT to co.uk, PROTECT against competitors and fraudulent use by scam artists

@CTUXSF is right. If it's a UK company only carrying out business to UK-based customers then .co.uk is the standard choice, and as someone in the UK I would trust co.uk over .com every day (and twice on Sundays), because trust online is the most important thing and co.uk tells me there's a very high likelihood I'm dealing with a UK company, with a UK address that I can search on Companies House - meaning they can be held to UK law if anything goes wrong.

The important factor is the SIZE of the UK company. If it's a local chip shop or a sole trader they really couldn't care less about owning the .com and certainly wouldn't start paying big sums for .com, but they might be persuaded with a £ 99 B.I.N. if you contact them saying their brand name is available at public AUCTION for £ 99 (you need to employ a sense of urgency)

I agree with @kite26 that if a company trades globally, or has global business ambitions they would be interested in acquiring the .com for their brand, if it was priced correctly. You can do your research to find out if a company trades internationally, or plans to. If you can't find this information just ask the company directly by email or phone.
