I think one of the ways to know if a domain name is good enough is to have the grandma test.

If you tell your grandma a name and ask her to remember and type it in a browser 2 days later, if she can do that, I think that should be a good domain.

This is more like the radio test only one level above

Maybe if grandma does many outbounds she could get lucky

That assumes that grandma knows about computers and the Internet. Some still think that microsoft is something that has happened to their husbands. :)

What if grandma has a good memory from doing all those crosswords and quiz programs on the TV? Got to give grandma some credit

the best test is hey google and name your brand and check out the search results.
Checkout my domain as an example: "Really big idea" without a com tld just 3 words REALLY BIG IDEA

You really need to consider your Grandma, a grandma that is English as a second language, & a couple of people who speak other primary languages.

That's why the generalization of "radio test" is referenced - it's not a controlled environment & anyone from anywhere may hear the ad... If everyone cant understand you are losing $.

When writing user guides, or product documentation, etc.. (anything written for general public consumption) - anything written over a 4th grade reading level loses a huge segment of the (worldwide) reader base. Yes - keep this in mind - the average reading/comprehension level (used in most pro- ads for anything) is 4th Grade.

Make sense?

I promise you Grandma does not give two hoots.. she has better things to do than trying to remember domain names. Better off showing her how to use the Favorites Bar, so she can to get to her bridge and euchre games on Yahoo. She might want Facebook too.

Also make sure the presets on the radio are functioning properly, so that her favorite radio stations (eg. oldies music, weather) are easy to get to.

Call signs for radio broadcast stations, Grandma's usually good at remembering those. LLLL formats.. ;)

If anything, make it the 5 year old test. If a 5 year old remembers it, its simple and memorable, at the very least for an inexperienced mind

Honestly, I think you're better off just developing your own skills. I know we all love our grammas, but she's just another person with her own subjective (and biased) opinions based on her tastes and her life experience. Your test doesn't prove anything beyond the fact that your gramma's memory is still pretty sharp!

While the grandma test does sound worthy, there are a few issues with it:
  • Many elderly are not familiar with computers or smart phones, let alone domain names
  • Short term memory loss is common amongst the elderly
  • Unless the domain name includes the elderly in its target groups, why bother?
