GoDaddy pre 2005 expiries

According to Godaddy:

If a domain name registered with us after May 2, 2005 expires, we automatically list it for auction on GoDaddy Auctions® 25 days later. You can bid on any expiring domain name listed at GoDaddy Auctions. The current registrant can reclaim the domain name from redemption up to 30 days after expiration.

What happens to domains registered before May 2, 2005?

If a domain name registered with us ...( anytime )

after May 2, 2005

expires

we automatically list it for auction on GoDaddy

(but let the reps explain in detail)

registrations are renewed annually, so if a domain name was originally registered in 2004 and continually renewed then it will have been registered for 17 years. In other words renewal = registration. 2005 is when we launched TDNAM, our original auction house so I would assume that language was added to let people know what happens to domains after expiration.

So if someone first registered their domain with Godaddy in 2004 and continuously renewed it on Godaddy, the name would not be listed on auctions?

A renewal is a registration, so if it was registered in 2004 and renewed, then it was also registered in 2005/2006/.../2020 etc. If it is allowed to expire then it would go to GD Auctions because it was registered in 2020
