The latest viral moneygrab in crypto is here - emoji subdomains provided by a viral new site y.at.

- πŸ”‘.y.at sold for $425,000 yesterday at the live auction.

- πŸš€πŸŒ•.y.at also sold for $200,000, and many more 6 figure and 5 sales yesterday too - see https://destiny.y.at/

From their description:

"Yat lets you use emojis as your universal username and identity on the internet. Imagine being known as πŸ”₯πŸ‰.y.at or πŸ€–πŸ‘»πŸ‘‘ instead of coffeequeen98 or [email protected]

By owning a Yat - let’s say πŸŒŠπŸ”±πŸŒ΄ - it’s yours forever. You are the ~only~ one on earth who owns these emojis.

The possibilities are endless with Yat. You can receive payments, use it on your socials, and eventually much more. Your Yat can be used as a link like this: y.at/πŸŒŠπŸ”±πŸŒ΄ (click it to see it!) and automatically redirect visitors to any website you want."

3y ago and still valid

Might be getting off-topic here. But I disagree. To keep things short:

How many different languages does the world have? IDK
Text = A better solution to caveman hyroglifics
Emojis + World Wide Web = a better universal solution than universal text (e.g.) hot dog & el perro caliente VS 🌭 & 🐢
Problem = too many keyboards / conflict defining universal

Imagine not having sound. As the internet is mostly visual. Consider yourself deaf for a moment. What do you want to input to show: happy or 😊 or happy-happy-happy ?

The issue now, is there are too many variants (expressions) of happy, and some (mostly older folks or the unexperienced emojier) may get confused at first.

Using the windows emoji keyboard (HOLD windows symbol AND press . period button)

Vs

upload_2021-4-4_12-23-48.png

This is not as universal/restricted as other emoji keyboards such as namepros or slack which would use something such as : happy : (minus the spaces) to show a smiley face opposed to puny code smiling face with smiling eyes = xn--o28h.

...

I'd be happy to dive deeper, and discuss this further, but this may drive this thread off topic. IDK... :panda:

Hardly any word on β€œusing” the emoji domain names for a day-to-day. Once .com get again in the game, everything will be good except the reg. stampede.

are there plans on .com opening up new emoji registrations again?

I think the play here is, anybody can have that emoji, but only one have yat emoji... Sorta like Huge v. Yuge?

B.at/πŸ¦‡ // email: πŸ¦‡@b.at
Sh.it/πŸ’© // email:πŸ’©@sh.it
Twitter.Top/🎩 // email: 🎩@twitter.top
C.at/😹 // email: 😹@c.at

Edit: (added)

What's stopping twitter or the other social media companies from launching emoji social media handles, such as Twitter.com/🐱🐢? Probably nothing. But could there be value in first to market, emojis as an email/payment ID? I think so. Patentable? IDK, I'm not a lawyer.

Were they able to get patent granted to using punycode in email addresses? Or punycode emoji in a identification category? With NFT/SSO/2FA money floating around like crazy old art money, it seems like a no brainer to throw an emoji at the blockchain, with a little bit of a ID + NFT base and see what sticks in this battle of tech evolution V. tulpenmanie.

Judging by their earlier URL, it just seems that the play was to be the ID.me of Emoji authentication. Poor early choice of domain; though, a Genius blockchain development idea nonetheless. And with the size of the players?/influencers?/earlyadopters?/discordcommunity? involved, this y.at project could get very intriguing. It seems bound to blow up some way or another, whether the blow up is a highly successful one, or catastrophic failure of one, is yet to be seen.

Does it matter that emojipedia.org has a global alexa rank of 1,534? more so pointing towards a developed authoritative type internet brand opposed to just a good idea + domain?

How much factor does a domain name have for authoritative purposes of legitimacy? Notice @songadaymann had cited Unicode and @emojipedia and not emojipedia.org.

Are we hating the cool idea because those chose to brand on a domain such as y.at? Or because we are seeing a ridiculously high price for their first single emoji subdomain sale? and there could be some concern for overhype? Would it matter if y.at branded on a domain such as Emojis.com?

For any yatters watching this thread (is that accurate, can I call you a yatter?) and other nPers, watching Emoji ID LLCs attempt to brand an emoji based service/product on a domain, reminds me of the controversy of the Emojis.com sale... See below

https://onlinedomain.com/2017/08/03...com-namejet-tries-sell-2nd-bidder-10-minutes/

https://www.namepros.com/threads/em...pm-central-time-100-bids-22k-already.1033058/

Would Emoji ID LLC purchasing and branding on Emojis.com add a quicker route to widespread internet adoption (similar to the Crypto.com play?), or is Y.at a better long term play? Similar to it being Google.com and not Search.com.

How is it cool?

It actually seems pretty stupid for a large number of reasons in my view.

Emoji domains have been tried before. What is the difference this time?

Why is a :).y.at better than :).ws, :).ml, or whatever?

With how much anything "NFT" and "Blockhain" is blowing up, just based on hype, marketing, and FOMO...now might be the time to cash in my beanie baby investments. ;)

Maybe I can digitize my beanie babies and sell them as 1 of 1 "art"...on the blockchain!

If you can sell NFT farts, anything is possible.

I would hope (guess) the difference is Emoji ID LLC isn't just selling an emoji domain. Or an Emoji subdomain for that matter. I assume, when buying a y.at, you're buying into the Y.at community, which includes influencer hype.

Would a single character handle be valuable if offered for sale on the donalds or the pillow talkers new social media platform? Because, buying a y.at subdomain, is essentially like buying a handle. Or so it seems. But I'm not a yet a yatter, so I really don't know much beyond this nP thread.

Why is a :).y.at better than :).ws, :).ml, or whatever?

I think, the same applies to why Twitter.com/brad or @brad on twitter or nP is more sought after. With the end goal, for daily use and/or the albeit HIGHLY speculative goal is that np @brad or y.at/🍍 will someday be sought after for resale gain. Or if purchased, with no resale hopes, its solely to be the 🍍@y.at send/receive identity / the pineapple yat linked at y.at/🍍.

Almost like a play on paypal.me gold rush

https://www.namepros.com/threads/paypal-launches-new-branded-site-on-paypal-me.877643/

Point being, y.at/🍍 may never catch on, or maybe it will. But the value is dependent on the yat platform/usergrowth. This is different than buying 🍍.to. As there can be only one 🍍.to or another 🍍.ws/ml/.etc just as there can only be one single emoji 🍍@y.at.

If you can sell NFT farts, anything is possible.

I've got some fart domains. But the problem with farts has always been the delivery system. It's not that easy to mail/package a fart. But apparently it's easy to NFT a fart? Near Fart Technology :D

The ToS/ToU of dot At (vs dot Com)
When you go to y.at you actually stepped into their domain/territory, out of internet (yes, out of Internet). It's up to them (y.at) to decide how to use t IoT ecosystem & what to do with their territory.

Any idea who, or what company is behind y(.)at?

I did a little research, and it looks like it has something to do with Tari Labs and NaveenSpark.

It also looks as if they may have initially started out as Emoji ID and later branded to Yat.

Riccardo Spagni and Naveen are behind Yat (and Tari).

They based Yat on OpenAlias.

Right now Yat works on centralized servers but in Tari's telegram group Riccardo Spagni explained Yat would be integrated in Tari when it will be launched.

Well, in any case another example of all the cool stuff you can make with a real 1-char domain :xf.grin:

Whats next? The emoji e-mail address? Oh, that already exists too :xf.wink:

The world needs emoji TLD -> eTLD

If you type some emojis + eTLD at the end should generate a link :D
And should be only one... eTLD

something like
:greedy::nailbiting:+:eTLD:
πŸ”πŸŸ+:eTLD:
πŸ›’πŸ‘Ÿ+:eTLD:

Well its funny. But seriously compared to domains - would it match the practical test compared to names? Can You remember it the same easy like names or word combinations? Would there not be much more confusion with the order, the exact emoji etc? Its also not always so easy to note.

1-singe emoji ok. 2, ok. But can you remember 3, 4, 5 emojis good? What do you think folks?

Are you suggesting EmojiLand be assigned a single .xn--e-cctld? 🌐

But why the need for there to be a .? or text right of the dot? ... Or so (I think) that is the HandShake vision...

You cant compare these..
Emoji "words" are a whole new language spoken by late Gen Z and the new Gen Alpha.
It's more about Expression than just saying Words...

So, well I can offer anyone a "Emk" emoji like:

:xf.smile:.e.mk , :xf.cool:.e.mk , :xf.eek:.e.mk , :xf.laugh::pompous:.e.mk

10000$ per 1-emoji , 1000$ per 2-emoji , renewals only 10$/year
Isn't this crazy cheap compared?
USE THE CHANCE!

Example (resolver required): 🦩🀝/

From: Show attachment 187193 To: Show attachment 187196

As Mike from Sky Include goes over in the video at minute mark 5:13, the biggest visual difference (might be able to fix with the right/update/new resolver??) in the URL between a HandShake emoji domain and a Yat, is how the punycode resolves/displays.

<HandShake>:
upload_2021-4-7_22-14-52.png

Vs

<Yat>:
upload_2021-4-7_22-12-53.png

Vs.
<Emoji.TO>:
upload_2021-4-7_23-45-39.png

When the emoji is in the domain, such as an emoji domain, or an emoji handshake domain, the emoji is converted to puny code. Because Yat opted to position the emoji as a subdomain, the URL is able to resolve without punycode, and with the https lock.
