Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

The Queen's Commonwealth Day Message 2021

The Queen pays tribute to the way in which communities across the family of nations have come together in response to the pandemic.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated "unity" and "selfless dedication" amid challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in her Commonwealth Day address Sunday, the first time royals have commemorated the annual occasion on TV only.

"The testing times experienced by so many have led to a deeper appreciation of the mutual support and spiritual sustenance we enjoy by being connected to others," the 94-year-old monarch said in her address. She spoke in a voiceover atop shots of frontline workers in commonwealth nations.

Estimation of the transmissibility and impact of the B.1.1.7 line of SARS-CoV-2 in England

Abstract:

A novel SARS-CoV-2 variant, VOC 202012/01 (lineage B.1.1.7), emerged in southeast England in November 2020 and is rapidly spreading toward fixation. Using a variety of statistical and dynamic modelling approaches, we estimate that this variant has a 43–90% (range of 95% credible intervals 38–130%) higher reproduction number than preexisting variants. A fitted two-strain dynamic transmission model shows that VOC 202012/01 will lead to large resurgences of COVID-19 cases. Without stringent control measures, including limited closure of educational institutions and a greatly accelerated vaccine roll-out, COVID-19 hospitalisations and deaths across England in 2021 will exceed those in 2020. Concerningly, VOC 202012/01 has spread globally and exhibits a similar transmission increase (59–74%) in Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States.

17% of SARS-CoV-2-positive cases reported skin rashes as the first presentation, and 21% as the only clinical sign of COVID-19

Abstract

Background: One of the challenging aspects of SARS-CoV-2 infection is its diverse multisystemic disease presentation.

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic value of cutaneous manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection and investigate their duration and timing in relation to other COVID-19 symptoms.

Methods: We used data from 336 847 UK users of the COVID Symptom Study app to assess the diagnostic value of body rash or an acral rash in SARS-CoV-2 infection, and data from an independent online survey of 11 544 respondents to investigate skin-specific symptoms and collect their photographs.

Results: Using data from the app, we show significant association between skin rashes and a positive swab test result (odds ratio 1·67, 95% confidence interval 1·42-1·97). Strikingly, among the respondents of the independent online survey, we found that 17% of SARS-CoV-2-positive cases reported skin rashes as the first presentation, and 21% as the only clinical sign of COVID-19. Together with the British Association of Dermatologists, we have compiled a catalogue of images of the most common skin manifestations of COVID-19 from 400 individuals (https://covidskinsigns.com), which we have made publicly available to assist clinicians in recognition of this early clinical feature of COVID-19.

Conclusions: Skin rashes cluster with other COVID-19 symptoms, are predictive of a positive swab test, and occur in a significant number of cases, either alone or before other classical symptoms. Recognizing rashes is important in identifying new and earlier cases of COVID-19.

COVID-19 risk increases with airborne pollen

When airborne pollen levels are higher, increased SARS-CoV-2 infection rates can be observed. These results were determined by a large-scale study conducted by an international team headed by researchers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Members of high-risk groups can protect themselves by watching pollen forecasts and wearing dust filter masks.

In the spring of 2020, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic appeared to coincide with the tree pollen season in the northern hemisphere. These observations prompted an international team of researchers to conduct an extensive investigation: The scientists wanted to know whether there is a demonstrable link between airborne pollen concentrations and SARS-CoV-2 infection rates.

The team showed that airborne pollen can account for, on average, 44% of the variation in infection rates, with humidity and air temperature also playing a role in some cases. During intervals without lockdown regulations, infection rates were on average 4% higher with every increase of 100 grains of airborne pollen per cubic meter. In some German cities, concentrations of up to 500 pollen grains per cubic meter per day were recorded during the study—which led to an overall increase in infection rates of more than 20%. In regions where lockdown rules were in effect, however, the infection numbers were on average only half as high at comparable pollen concentrations.

Rural Alaska is getting Covid-19 vaccinations right. Here's what the rest of the US can learn

(CNN)The immovable challenges of living in Alaska would, in theory, make it a nightmare to vaccinate all of its 731,000-plus residents: It's the largest state in the US in terms of land size, has some of the most extreme weather of any state and many resident Alaska Natives, who are disproportionately dying from Covid-19, live in the remote reaches of the state.

And yet, at 40 doses administered per 100 people, Alaska is one of the leading states in the US when it comes to Covid-19 vaccinations.

In many ways, Alaska was already prepared for a massive vaccine rollout -- they've used similar methods to deliver the flu vaccine statewide. But much of its success is by learning on the fly, coming up with creative ways to get vaccines into arms and prioritizing the state's most at-risk residents.

Here is the North, communities had the option to receive the Moderna vaccine first. Most people over 18 chose to get vaccinated (myself included), others thought we were the guinea pigs. Last week district lockdowns were lifted and people travelled in and out for the first time in months. Yesterday we had our first confirmed case of Covid in the community. Now we're back on lockdown :xf.sick:

@Cannuk , I'm not sure how long ago you were vaccinated, but would it have kicked in yet?

Should be safe, I got mine about 3 weeks ago. Don't know particulars of the outbreak, but many here live in overcrowded housing which is problematic. Besides that, the nearest hospital is 500kms by air.

The officials know that there will be an up tick in the number of Covid cases once the restrictions are lifted,

But I believe that they are trying to balance the number of infections (and casualties) against the economical benefits of opening up the businesses and allowing people to travel,

Kind of like what a General does at War as far as weighing the acceptable number of casualties for what could be gained in any operation.

I like for businesses to be opened, I just hope that I am not one of the soldiers that has to be sacrificed for this victory. :xf.wink:

It is a balancing act for sure. Our circumstances are different, we're already isolated and taking all necessary precautions. As for loosening restrictions, particularly in popular travel destinations and more densely populated areas, traditional Spring Break could lead to a Perfect Storm. :xf.frown:

In animals, COVID-19 vaccine candidate prompts strong immune responses and prevents infection

A new SARS-CoV-2 vaccine candidate, developed by giving a key protein’s gene a ride into the body while encased in a measles vaccine, has been shown to produce a strong immune response and prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and lung disease in multiple animal studies.

500_lilab.jpg

Scientists attribute the vaccine candidate’s effectiveness to strategic production of the antigen to stimulate immunity: using a specific snippet of the coronavirus spike protein gene, and inserting it into a sweet spot in the measles vaccine genome to boost activation, or expression, of the gene that makes the protein.

Even with several vaccines already on the market, researchers say this candidate may have advantages worth exploring – especially related to the measles vaccine’s established safety, durability and high-efficacy profile.

“The measles vaccine has been used in children since the 1960s, and has a long history of safety for children and adults,” said Jianrong Li, senior author of the study and a professor of virology in The Ohio State University Department of Veterinary Biosciences.

Full vaccine effect only kicks in 15 days after second dose, Israeli HMO says

Israel is risking an unnecessary increase in morbidity by issuing green passes so soon after vaccination, and instead should make people wait another week, a healthcare provider is arguing, in research that may have global reverberations.

Meuhedet Healthcare Services reported on Monday, based on an analysis of more than 100,000 members, that vaccine effectiveness reaches 96 percent on the fifteenth day after full vaccination. From days 7 to 14, it is 89%.

I know that Dollar General stores have been in negotiations to distribute/give vaccine injections.

I've been on a golf course all day (not a good player but life does not get much is better than 27 holes on a course where deer, geese and wildlife of all types thrive...and NO houses) and have not seen/heard the news.

On the way home, I stopped in a DG for a bag of ice and they were franticly running around. I asked what was going on and a worker told me that they just got a coded call from corporate to be prepared to close the store at a moments notice. Regular closing time is 10pm and this all was happening about 6:40.

There was an area manager there that looked like a deer in the headlights...not sure if it has to do with a vaccine announcement or something else...anyone else notice anything odd at your local store?

Interesting...I will see if I can find any info...

ADD: There is/was a shooting but does not seem to involve DG. Spotted the story below as I was searching breaking news:

UK COVID-19 variant has significantly higher death rate, study finds

LONDON – A highly infectious variant of COVID-19 that has spread around the world since it was first discovered in Britain late last year is between 30% and 100% more deadly than previous dominant variants, researchers said on Wednesday.

In a study that compared death rates among people in Britain infected with the new SARS-CoV-2 variant – known as B.1.1.7 – against those infected with other variants of the COVID-19-causing virus, scientists said the new variant’s mortality rate was “significantly higher”.

The B.1.1.7 variant was first detected in Britain in September 2020, and has since also been found in more than 100 other countries.

Pfizer vaccine may be effective against all coronavirus variants

The Pfizer vaccine may be effective against the Brazil, UK and South Africa coronavirus variants, a new study suggests.

The research also indicates the Pfizer vaccine generated an antibody response against the variants when tested in a laboratory against an engineered version of the virus, with blood samples taken from 15 people who had received the jab.

The new coronavirus variants carry mutations which change the spike protein of the virus which it uses to attach to human cells, and may also have an impact on transmission.

Researchers found that levels of neutralising antibodies were generated against all of the variants, although this did vary quantitatively between variants.

According to the correspondence published in New England Journal Of Medicine, the response was greatest against the original variant, and against the more transmissible B117 variant first detected in Kent.

It was slightly lower against the P1 Brazil variant, and lower still against the B151 variant first identified in South Africa, the researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch and Pfizer found.
