Q1 2021 is also going to show some interesting trends. The main problem is the implosion of .ICU gTLD. It is down to around 1 million from 6.2 million this time last year.

Outside the heavily discounted new gTLDs, the ccTLDs and .COM/NET/ORG generally have a strong performance. Heavily discounted domain names do not renew well. Some heavily discounted new gTLDs have a renewal rate well below 5% and others, in the past, have had renewal rates below 1%. At the other end of the scale, some new gTLDs have renewal rates of over 60%. (.COM is between 54% and 57%). The blended renewal rate (all domain names that are up for renewal in a given period) for strong TLDs is around 70%

The other thing to remember about 2020 is that it was a highly abnormal year for domain names due to Covid. Some of the ccTLDs were seeing new registration rates almost double that of usual rates. Some of those new registrations from early 2020 may not renew well when they come up for renewal in Q1 and Q2 2021.

People are still registering domain names but there is likely to be an attempt to create a new .ICU for low renewal rate registrations in the next few months. The other big event is the auction of the Frank Schilling/Uniregistry gTLDs next month.
