Some domains can take quite a while to ripen to full potential. If you get in early on untapped niches, it's worth waiting to get properly rewarded. Grabbing the coattails on exploding niche domains gets very competitive.

Many things get obsolete, like hardware in the tech arena. Screen displays and internet speeds change, but domains and websites have proven to be very resilient. Who knows what the future holds for them. It would be awesome to be around to find out. But I think we're ok for another 30 years with our current system: domain name = internet place.

I have held names for 14 yrs before they have sold. You need to get the right names to hold long-term, this doesnt work with all domains.

In this forum, people are looking to sell fast for cash flow, mostly. So, only post names which you want to sell fast at a reasonable price and you can have a sale.

If you feel you have investment grade top names, be ready to to hold them for decade+ or more.

I personally do not disclose such names in a resellers forum.

Holding domains for a long time only makes sense if the domain is good. If its not really good, you are just holding the registrar over with your payments.

Nobody knows the future, you will hear what you want to hear and see what you want to see. The whole internet was supposed to be gone by now if you spoke to most "Experts" in the mid 90's. And if you go way back the personal computer was just a fad, and so was television.

My point is nobody knows what a year out holds let alone a decade.

If you will invest make sure to invest in quality not in quantity, and start listing it everywhere you can as soon as possible even at a very high price.

Ai has been around since the 1950's, but its potential and value is only now beginning to be realized.
Same goes for TV. While broadcasting began in the 1940's, the industry is just now rolling-out a web-based broadcasting standard aka "Next Gen TV".

The 'first mover advantage' is often a long-term (intergenerational) investment play.
I focused on (hand reg) TV domains with this in mind, and have declined 99% of offers to date.
The way I see it, the average after market domain sale is around $2K... while renewing a domain like Drone TV until they are everywhere, say 30 to 40 years will cost around $500.

Will domains be around then? I'm confident they will be -and have higher value, as the trend now is to isolate / block the 'bad actor' domains (new regs and parked domains) as they cause about 70% of the grey ware, malware, spam etc.).

So if your playing the long game my advice would be to put something of value on the site as its the new, and idle, domains that web security experts fear the most. Beyond that, there can be some economic and networking benefits.

a domain having all the peculiar features of being termed as premium is a good investment. And, you may renew it in advance for 9 to 10 years. There are three things that may effect it. One is a sale for the price you agree with the buyer. And, another is a UDRP and third is domain theft or suspension which can be avoided following security measures.

The oldest domain I've sold was held about 16 - 17 years and have sold others held for 10 - 15 years.

Have some others in my portfolio a bit older and am happily renewing 'em as their new owners will eventually appear and click a " Buy Now " button.

Will always make a profit of four figures.

Will websites be replaced or go obsolete you asked?

IMO many potential - lower xxxx - mid xxxx domain name buyers use a facebook or other platform page instead of buying a domain name and have for years.

Also IMO websites for unique and large companies will stay operational in the ( my ) foreseeable future.
