From the article: A Freedom of Information request has revealed a Welsh Government official with foresight managed to acquire the Wales.com domain name for £100,000 back in 2008 – a domain one expert has said now could […]

100,000 x 20% compound growth for 13 years = 1.070,000 :) Believable or not? I think its not beyond the realms of possibility.

I reckon it wont be long before google facebook and amazon decideto buy a small country and manage it and run its finances etc

But going back to the wales .com etc

As

.town

And

.city

Are gtlds etc every town and city in the world is a gtld domain name
Reminds of an Iain Banks book - The Business

It's a thriller/satire on Global Capitalism - quite funny in places and a good read

They didn't try and buy Wales though.......

Peace,

Don't want to take the thread to far off topic.....

Got all his books - he is one of my favourite authors - also did a lot of sci fi / space opera books under Iain M Banks - sadly passed away in 2013 - RIP

The wales.com site explains its purpose at https://www.wales.com/about-walescom

You can find further in-depth information about visiting Wales on the Visit Wales website; and information about investing and working in Wales on the Trade and Invest Wales website.

Visit the Welsh Government website for information about the devolved Government for Wales.

Who is Wales.com for?
Wales.com is for anyone with an interest in finding out more about Wales as a country – and place to invest, work, visit or study.

It is mainly aimed at international audiences and is designed to provide a warm and broad introduction to Wales, with VisitWales.com and TradeandInvest.Wales providing much greater detail for those that want to find out more.

Funded by Welsh Government, Wales.com’s role is to showcase Wales on behalf of its businesses, organisations and people. Whilst it will sometimes feature information about Welsh Government or a signature policy it will do so as part of telling the broader story of Wales.

Visit the Welsh Government website for information about the devolved Government for Wales.

Is it a new website?
Wales.com has been a long-established portal for promoting Wales. The website has recently been updated as part of a project called the Wales Digital Gateway, the current phase of an ongoing programme of continual improvement to strengthen our digital marketing infrastructure and content approach for the future.

The latest version of Wales.com is on a new technical platform, shared with VisitWales.com. The website is also more magazine-like than previous versions of the site – acting as a showcase of stories from people and organisations across all parts of Wales that can also be shared through social media.

The website is currently in BETA and you can expect to see a number of further improvements in the coming months, including: more proactive use of social media; more short-form articles on various aspects of Welsh life; a new language version of the site; and technical improvements to the user experience we provide on the site.

Interesting that cymru.com redirects to team-cymru.com - Cymru is the Welsh language name for Wales.

The value of the domain name may be increased by increased pressures for constituent nations of the United Kingdom to leave the UK - polls now show a majority in Scotland wanting independence from the UK. I regularly see serious entities using the .scot extension.

The Scottish government use .org - the .com is available for sale - the owner is probably asking a lot of money for it.......

$100,000 is obviously really cheap for that domain but $3M is a grossly inflated valuation for it.

Brad

3 mil is definitely way above market price Brad. Somewhere around 1 mil maybe?

Yes scotland.com is open to offers it says https://www.scotland.com/corporate/inquire/

The site implies they have a trademark but UK trademarks office only has 6 registered marks for the standalone word Scotland, probably not them, and none registered for the phrase Scotland.com. I'd expect independence to increase the value of the name.
