Wanted to get on the pros' take on how you would go as to investing in domains in 2021.

Basically, I'd like to build a small portfolio with some capital I have, and I know for a fact I can't afford 4-5 Fig. domain names.

Should you continue to find "deals" on .com brandable's through auctions, drop-catching them?
Or rather to focus on new TLD's etc.?

Fire at will - Any advice is appreciated :)

This year investing in ONLY liquid domains. Domains that sell themselves: one-word, dictionary word, 3L, 4L.
A lot of hidden gems in the nTLDs for Reg. Fee.
Already over 20 million domains in our scanned list. It's mind-blowing!
Soon to be released to the public. Watch out!

Hi

how much capital may determine size of portfolio
but size or quantity, is less important than quality.

determine how much you can afford to lose, before making any purchases.
and as @Josytal mentioned, try to buy domains that sell themselves

imo...

Won’t these be in 5 fig ranges each if we’re talking about 4LLLL .coms ? Looking forward to that list :) I mean my plan is to hold and sell long term. I dont mind playing the long game. As long as what I’m buying is of quality though.

I would rather own two domains I paid $1000 for than 20 I paid $100 for.

You will never worry about renewals on 2 domains so it's easy to hold out for the whale price.

That said you probably need to flip a few domains so you can learn the ropes before dropping $1000 on a domain.

Just focus on sub $100 domains with a clear buyer (ideally buyers) in the top search results. Buy 10 domains correctly and you will easily sell 1 to cover your investment.

Don't buy domains hoping somebody will name their business that way. Buy domains where existing businesses are using that name.

Makes sense actually! Buyer intent domains like “topwebhosts.com” so to say ? And where would you go on finding these: dropped lists, auctions ?

If it were my money and I started with mid $XXX budget, I’d probably stick to one domain. Potential investments I’d consider:
  • Pronounceable LLLL.com
  • Single somewhat common word .org or maybe .net
  • Two word .com that is commonly used, has decent search volume or high CPC (and not too long)
  • Exceptional, short new tld / hack domain with term(s) that’s commonly used. Must have low renewal costs
  • Maybe, just maybe a very strong .io or .co
All in my opinion

If your not at least 95% confident in your own decisions regarding purchases and valuations I would advise staying away from domain investing altogether.
Waiting for the right buyer to come along is all part of the game. But even during this time you should be receiving a reasonable amount of low offers that confirm your on track. Entering the domain investing field is all about getting feedback from prospective buyers and definitely NOT domain boards. The amount of time you've personally got available to commit to searches and investigations should be a major part of deciding strategy. Those that really only have an hour or two a day would probably do better using that time at the auction sites. However if your happy to spend hours at the keyboard then you widen your search criteria. Hand regs are not out of the game by a long way - somewhere between 3 and 4 hours and a day of investigation of a 'Defined' field should deliver at least one possible/reasonable hand reg.

So my question would be how much spare time do you have to invest in domains. should be your first question when deciding strategy. Time available is more valuable than bucks in your pocket imho. When it comes to domains and it can often help prevent rash decisions if used right.

Personally I've always made my worst decisions regarding domains when I have plenty of spare cash. and that includes at renewal time

You're either really clear about what you are chasing and already have your vision as your asking about learning from scratch which I would also suggest spending money on something you are confident in getting a return from. I am not about to take up Horse racing because someone else made money.

If you can renew domains for 1000 usd at least an year from your personal savings (not domain profit). You should try hand reg so you may get Highest ROI.

I mostly handreg untill I get affordable LLLL.com , One word .co or class one key word.

I hand registered most of mine and waiting- refused 1k for defi.es & 330 for Bibimbap.co. Sold many low ball domains to cash flow & sold a vc for 550$ this month.

My only purchased domains are- urea.co (pending offer for 5k) OnlineCasino.cx , Gamble.cx , Earw.com (sold)
XRKV.com (SOLD) KiXA.net (sold)

But remember other tld except dotcom are expensive to renew. I am already worried about my renminbi.digital & wrestling.gg & vaccine.vc type domains. Dropped a lot of them.

But I broker a lot of domains. Thats why I can sell & by many good domain in liquid price.

I disagree on the forum boards being of no value in a domainer strategy. Honest opinions from people with more experience in this field than you (if the person is open minded) can help you change course.

We all make mistakes in this field and relying strictly on one gauge (offers) is weak. We should be using multiple resources including NamePros in deciding what to get and what to keep.

Some of us don’t allow lowball offers on some names so by your logic those should be dropped without tire kickers being able to make offers. And that is false.

A good thread
looking forward to more replies
In conclusion, I believe that even if an investment fails, it will not affect the quality of your life
best wishes in 2021

Yeah pronouncable LLLL’s are just out of the question as theyre in 20k ranges usually. I mean I’ve seen unprounouncales going for that to the chinese buyers who flooded the market a few years back.

EDIT: It’s the LLLs that go for 20k. My memory’s foggy 😂

I’ve made money from domains, just not in the usual sense as most investors have done. Now leaning more in building a “portfolio” as they say and holding onto them. Dosent matter if it takes me 5-10 years to sell ‘em. And yeah since .com is hella bombarded as someone said maybe beat to focus on .io’s or newer TLD’s. Although those new ones have insanely high premium renewal fees.

Its interesting to see that you’ve niched out even in .gg’s .vc’s where as most people only focus on com’s. So would you say you’re holdings now are mostly hand reg new gTLDS’s ?

Love the message. The forums in my opinion aren’t where you find your buyers for the most part. We’re all wholesalers here, no one’s gonna pay you retail price, at least that’s what I think, then again I don’t know much

Hi

my last sale on the forum, was $,$$$ range
my last purchase on the forum, was $,$$$ range

on forums, you don't have to find buyers..
they make themselves known
you only have to define roi, and margins for the future

imo...

I think is year is going to be a hard time for investing (prices too high) but a great time to be selling.

The high street as changed forever, more and more companies trading solely online and the fact social media can delete accounts, even the president of the US (whether you agree with it or not) shows domain names more important than ever
