question Most important domain industry news?

Hi there,

I've been out of the domain business for somewhat two years – not following news, blogs, etc.. Still had some sales taking place from time to time on autopilot. Now, I'm considering getting back on board, and obviously should catch up with the key industry news. So a bit of cheating, the question to y'all – what are a few most important changes that have happened around domain investing during the past couple of years in your opinion?

Cheers

P.S. As that could've sounded quite ambiguous to some ;), I think I'm better to clarify that the initial reason was related to health issues – I've decided to take a couple of month break and haven't noticed how it's turned into a couple of years :).

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
  • There are fewer and fewer 5L 5N domains:xf.cry:

Welcome back! Many years ago I had to take a break for health reasons as well...turned into several years.

In my world, the biggest thing happening are the number of good (some great) domains that are becoming available as names are allowed/forced to expire. Many diamonds in the rough are available on a regular basis.

You mean random 5Ls or just the good ones?

I’m glad you are doing better
Thank you!

Thank you and that's a very interesting observation you're sharing. Do you have ideas about the possible reasons for this? And what does mean "forced to expire"? BTW, shouldn't it make the negative impact on the current retail pricing, since the replacement cost goes lower? :)

Do you have ideas about the possible reasons for this? And

Godaddy has picked up several big chunks of names recently, 259K or more. A couple of old timers have passed and a few of their names are dropping...not many, but every now and then a few come thru.

Thanks, so I see, that's a sort of the temporary expiration volume spike - thus the answer to my latest question should be No.

Welcome back to domain investing, @vast and glad that you are now able to return. Often a break from something can give new perspectives.

In terms of what is the major news since you were active before, it could be a very long list, but I would note:
  • The brandable marketplaces are much more numerous and important and offer additional choices in ways to reach buyers.
  • There are many more great podcasts in the industry.
  • The generic country codes, things like .co, .io and others have found a strong market.
  • There are now more choices in landers.
  • There are some marketplaces with very low commissions.
  • There are new options for wholesale sales. In addition to NamePros, places like DNWE and NameLiquidate.
  • Along with Afternic and Sedo, DAN has emerged as a large general purpose marketplace.
  • Payment plans are now important, and will be more so in my opinion.
But NamePros is still the great place it was. :xf.smile:

Wow, many thanks for that information Bob, the one regarding the low commission marketplaces (after some quick reading I guess SAV is one of them?) and DNWE with NameLiquidate.is especially appreciated! As to DAN (I'm still often thinking 'Undeveloped', lol), it has already started to emerge those days, had some sales with them - has it got the larger market chunk since then?

BTW, what's about the expiring domain sales venues, is the market still dominated by GoDaddy followed by NameJet/SnapNames (at least in terms of volume)?

Thanks a lot @YairDD, looking forward to hear your thoughts :).

Actually several registrar marketplaces have good rates, but you are right SAV especially. The new marketplace that advertises on NamePros at bottom of most pages, BIIX has super low commissions (I don't yet have an account with them, so can't speak from experience) - their system is integrated with the NameWorth valuation system.

has it got the larger market chunk since then?
Yes, perhaps someone has the exact numbers but I think maybe order of 8 million now at DAN I read somewhere (correct me someone if this is wrong), was only 1/6 that not many years ago. Still less than Afternic, Sedo but getting closer. Would be interesting to know how the sales volume compares, but we don't have complete data for any of the three to my knowledge.

I don't do the expiry auctions much, but I am pretty sure that is true. You will find the prices on expiring auctions are MUCH higher than just a few years ago though!

Best wishes for every success.

Not sure if my response re passing domainers was clear...although not that many names are in this segment, the 'forced' part is due to friends, family, etc not having the proper codes to manage the deceased domain investors accounts/names. Sadly for those left behind, the names make into the expiry stream.

I was afraid all the names dropping would have a negative effect as well. It may have a 'leveling off' of prices to some degree but thus far I have not seen a significant change. Things are as they always have been...a good name is a good name and it has value.

I've already managed to grab a name that a big domainer sat on for years and had a minimum asking price of 10 grand. It was not worth nearly that much, even at full retail, but the person that owned it used that number as their min asking price as a default. It was eventually worth 1/5 of that to an end buyer.

Since we share a similar past (same cause for domain investing delay) I am curious to know how you move forward with regular posts...your fresh 'old' eyes would make for an interesting thread such as: Old School Domainer Gets Fresh Restart (or something similar). Best of luck to you...keep an eye on Godaddy expiry stream as well as Dynadot for some decent dropping names.

I haven't noticed any issues with your English :).
Is there any stats showing the steady growth of 5L regs? I remember we've been there several years ago, has ended with the bubble burst.

Thanks, good to know - yet the main thing DAN and others are missing in my opinion is the domain distribution network implementation. This is probably what holds me at Afternic with their 20% fee. Ah, and the proactive sales staff ready to step into the tough negotiations. But it's really nice to see another major player in this field.

Not sure if my response re passing domainers was clear...although not that many names are in this segment, the 'forced' part is due to friends, family, etc not having the proper codes to manage the deceased domain investors accounts/names. I've got it now - and indeed, it's very sad to see deceased domain investors' online assets vanishing while their families are likely to know nothing about the value of this stuff or even its existence.

Starting feeling like a dinosaur :) (and aging doesn't always make you wiser, heh). Actually, I haven't been a frequent poster those days, I can't promise this will change further - but your idea is really cool, definitely creative! (y)

Thanks again!
