Since discovering the domain industry 36 months ago I've hand registered well over 3,000 domains. At least in my case they seem to come from everywhere, and here's a list.

1. From other domainers - many of my domains have come from NP members
2. From TV commercials - i don't sleep much, but I've seen thousands of TV ads using domains to sell their products and services.
3. Radio - ever since hearing about the "Radio test", i listen differently then ever before.
4. Billboards, magazine's and even books like the Bible (that's not to say even the Quaran)
5. License Plates - believe it or not I've reg'd dozens of domains from idea's I've got from vanity tags.
6. From conversation with friends and just listening to others comments whether they be reporters or actors.
7. From domain sources like Go Daddy and other brokers. The last domain I registered about an hour ago came from Go Daddy's "Comparable Domains Sold For:" where the domain LuxorHomes.com sold for $5,000, and I was able to create a hand reg using "Luxor" for one of my new real estate domains.
8. Finally, for no apparent reason ideas for hand reg's just come out of thin air. I wonder if ThinAirDomains.com is available:xf.rolleyes:

Where do your ideas for hand regs come from?

Isn't it fun....i'm a sports guy and many of my ideas come from sports....especially team "nicknames" like Raider(s), Dolphin(s), Astro(s) and I just found a new source for "Football Club nicknames in the UK" where there are hundreds of them.

Thanks for contributing(y)

I get inspiration from everything. My own life, sold names, news sources, commercials, movies, thesarus, current events etc.

I do not hand reg that much anymore. And have gotten much more choosy with time about what I register or buy which I think is a natural progression in domaining.

You can’t get so caught up that you think every idea you have is pure genius.

You have to analyze the probability that someone else will ever want this name be it an end user or another domainer.

If you are honest with yourself, that will leave many names you might like left unregistered. It needs to be more about what is most sellable.

Priceless:xf.smile:....while I know your'e right, addictions are hard to overcome. That said however I do have thousands of names in spiral notebooks that I never registered:xf.frown: Genius is a terrible thing to waste:xf.rolleyes:

Try everything rational in browser that should of be taken by now then test if it resolves then search for availability. I have had the best week buying for hand reg for in long time.

Viral videos or online trends.

I was once in a now-defunct Philippine soc_cer forum, we were choosing on what to call the national foo_tball team's moniker. I pitched in my personal choice, but wasn't even considered. I didn't like the winning moniker, but I still registered it anyway 2007. The domain name and the actual team was a complete unknown then because of the team's subpar performance. The team made history in 2010 when it won over much better Viet_nam. The name is now a household name.

Ideas for handregs really do come from everywhere. Just today I was reading a thread started by a long term member who reported that Sedo sold a domain PharmacistOnDemand.com he registered in 2012 for $10,000. Crazy, but it inspired EscortOnDemand.com that I couldn't believe was available. It appears to have been registered since the 90's to be dropped in 2019. I was kidding, but I said to someone if PharmacistOnDemand.com sold for 10K than EscortOnDemand.com should bring 100K.

My point is about hand reg's....they're like a box of chocolates, "you never know what you're gonna get:xf.rolleyes:"

This is an excellent topic of which I've been spending a great deal of time and effort developing into a really cool and efficient system.

I can't say more right now but I will be watching this thread with interest to see what other people use for inspiration.

Thank you very much for starting this useful, constructive topic @ThatNameGuy. Kudos to you and other contributors.
It is really fun to search for a nice domain name. The satisfaction that we get if the desired name is available for registration, is immense indeed. Then leave it to the luck, yes exactly domain names need a lot of luck.

Try and get as close as you can to the primary news sources of several research and development topics.

Big announcements, significant sociological/technological shifts/advancements are rare and opportunities don’t come often.

I registered a massive domain name off the back of an almost unnoticed announcement in financial services. It’ll take a couple of years to mature but I have no doubt it’s an 8 figure domain. And all for a few bucks.

It’s partly skill with a big helping of luck.

Pick a topic and go down the rabbit hole.

Haroon...you're welcome. I've been at this now for about three years and I've found hand registering domains is "almost" as good as sex.

You've seen recently that I've hand registered about 900 .Realty domains, and it took me the better part of 60 days to accomplish that feat. btw, I finally got some help from Epik where they helped develop landers like you'll see if you key Spectra.Realty into your URL. They have created a dozen or so different landers for all my .Realty domains because I think they felt sorry for me....btw, begging, pleading, groveling and even a little praying didn't hurt.

I noticed you own about 50 .realty domains that you have listed with Dan, and some of them are pretty good like Designing.Realty, Residence.Realty, Prestigious.Realty and even Bogota.Realty.

My haul of .Realty domains may not be over IF I'm able to successfully "outbound market" them to realtor/agents who like them, and have a need for them. If you haven't noticed, the real estate market is HUGE, and we have just what they need:xf.wink:

Finally, like with anything else the more we do this Haroon, the better we get. There are hand regs out there just waiting to be adopted, and some of them can turn out to be pretty good kids if we raise them right.

Thanks again(y)

After pondering this question a bit more it came to me that many of my "best" domains started as a result of poor domains other people have registered.

That seems strange but actually the logic makes perfect sense to me.

When I see a domain that obviously doesn't work, it motivates me to do better and I look for something better. And I don't think I'm the only one doing that.

Speculation. Niche variants. I dont squat , just get into deep thought, if the best was taken Id get 2nd best. Which led me 11 years ago to start the thread here "Your reg of the day"

Almost all of my hand reg domains are geos. In many cases, doesn't make sense to buy a geo from an auction unless it's something special. I pick some "monetizable" keywords... insurance, real estate, finance, crypto, professional services, etc. and I register any ones that are available for big cities. Then I wait and see what sells... and use that to determine what keywords to keep registering. For example: I register [City]DebtConsolidation.com [City]DebtHelp.com [City]DebtServices.com [City]BankruptcyLawyers.com for a couple dozen big cities like NYC, Boston, Miami, LA, Toronto, etc. and then I wait. AustinDebtConsolidation.com sells for $2995 a few months later so I then register these same keywords for dozens of Tier 2 cities like Albuquerque, Baton Rouge, and Omaha. I also register additional similar domains for big cities like DebtConsolidation[City].com DebtHelp[City].com and [City]DebtSolutions.com and again wait. If more sell, I keep registering... if none sell for a while I will eventually drop the smallest cities + least desirable keywords if they get no traffic.

After years of following this approach, you end up owning swarms of domains for select keywords that are typically very profitable. I have even identified geo keywords few other domainers seem to think about. For example: I own cryo[City].com cryotherapy[City].com [City]cryo.com and [City]cryotherapy.com for almost every major city in USA. All started when I sold CryotherapyChicago.com for $1295 (when I only owned a couple of them) and went and registered all the other cities... now I have sold dozens of them even for low profile cities. Dropped the smallest cities this year due to COVID (no one of their right mind is opening this kind of business right now), but will register a bunch more once pandemic ends. With geos, if you keep the price low almost anything can sell. If someone wants to give it a try, I think cannabis and sports betting geos will sell well over the next 5 years. If [City]OnlineBetting.com is taken, maybe [City]BettingOnline.com is available. For great keywords like casino, cbd, etc. I find the .net and .org will sell as long as you keep it one word. For example: buy [City]Dispensary.org but never [City]MarijuanaDispensary.org, buy [City]Solar.net but never [City]SolarPanels.net, etc.

Wow....that was great information you shared. I see you have mostly .com's, and your strategy is spot on. So you do no outbound? Just buy, "and then I wait"? I'm doing something similar but with .Realty domains and their .com equivalents. For instance I may own Manhattan.Realty and ManhattanRealty.com if it's available, but it's unlikely someone would be looking for Manhattan.Realty unless they're familiar with gTLD's and how they work.

I have to say, your post is one of the best and most informative I've read in the three years I've been a member of NP. Thanks again for sharing(y)

WeedInspiration.com or WeedInspired.com are available. Domains give me a natural high....i actually domain and drive:xf.wink: I reg'd one this morning when I pulled up behind a car with the license tag UGA DOC. UGA stands for the University of Georgia and their football teams nickname is The Bulldogs, and their mascot is a Bulldog named UGA. So at the next light i check to see if the name was registered, and Voila!....i'm now the proud new owner of UGADOC.com

While I didn't think about it at the time, a friend of my wife's brother is a Veterinarian who graduated Vet School at the University of Georgia:xf.smile:

And people wonder why I'm always HIGH:xf.eek:
