Major figure of the European domain name industry, the Austrian domainer Dietmar Stefitz has died on the 4th of December 2020 in Valencia, Spain, in his late 60s.
In the last decade, he organized many domaining events in Spain, where he has lived for over 20 years, and in other cities in Europe. His only goal when gathering people was to make them learn from each other, share the best practices, create friendships and have a great time. His action lead to the constitution of a strong European domaining community, with an identity inspired from his personality.
His kindness and generosity were legendary and genuine. He loved the relationships with people and used to give the same attention to anybody regardless his or her nationality, age, gender, education, size of domain portfolio, purchasing power, etc.
European domainers shall be forever grateful for his legacy of placing humans first, way before domain names, money and transactions. Nobody in the European domaining sector has even had even one third of its well-deserved popularity. He was also a bridge between European domaining and US domaining, being the friend and model of so many people from each side of the Atlantic Ocean. We will miss him. A lot.

Dietmar was a solid, gracious man. Fellow conference creator, and it stood out that we were of a shared mind to really lean in, curate, care and connect people at events. He did a lot of work as an ambassador for our industry in Europe.

His passing really got to me yesterday, but I believe in silver linings, that he had many extra years than the doctors had suggested to him at the early stages of his dianosis.

I first met him in person at the ICANN meeting in Copenhagen, and his health was starting to slow - I stepped up and helped him with an event in Berlin a couple of years ago and had the opportunity to meet his brother and some of his family. Truly stellar people.

I paused a domainer focused social that a fellow domainer runs yesterday (12/4) at the beginning and about 60 participants all did a vigil for him and we did an additional tribute at the tail end of it. It was really touching as a way of paying respects during this strange zoom-based time we find ourselves in.

I was fortunate to have met Dietmar in 2015 at NamesCon Europe. I was living in Greece at the time, so attending a European conference made sense. He was the best host ever and the day after the conference personally took out of town guests on a tour of Valencia, Spain. The conference was amazing and he was definitely a class act. He will be greatly missed by the domain community!
