question Up to how much would you pay for a 1-word .co up to 9L?

Seeing Bob Hawkins' blog post about .co sales climbing this year, I got interested in investing in one-word .co domains at 9L or less, nouns or adjectives. I was wondering what would be a safe cap for investing in one? The one I'm eyeing right how at auction is getting close to being $1K and while it's appraised around $15K, I'm not sure how high I should go.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
You cant tell without knowing the word

Example
Insurance.co - 9 letter that would be worth it
Agreement.co - 9 letter thats not worth it

It has to have commercial use, you cant just get any dictionary word? Make sure you have a list of potential end-users before buyng a name, especially if youre spending around $1K. You are much better off buying a decent .COM if spending that kind of $$$.

Who's appraising it at $15K??

Thanks for the input. Park.io appraised it and the domain is stellar[dot]io. Since it's getting out of my budget, I don't mind sharing it at this point, and can perhaps use it as a case study for future similar domain drops and scenarios.

Sorry about that, I meant to say .co. I've been up since 4 AM so I misspoke.

Park.io valuation is crazy off the charts. But the said domain is already over 1000 6 days from auction end. It will be a bidding war between very veteran investors.

I would personally stay away and wait for better opportunity that comes by under the radar.
PS: I also had back ordered it but it is going crazy now.

very risky buy unless someone is buying it to develop it into a project. You can't market the name much, its a general word, it's a .co and you could buy great names with a lot better chance of flipping for good money than this name.

The fact that some io and tv etc names are getting high prices means nothing. They only make it in the domain news because they are rare events. Unfortunately im sure every time this type of news hits, uneducated investors throw more money in the garbage.

Its not a strong keyword
One of the most popular cryptocurrencies with a ~$5 billion market cap is called Stellar, which is what initiated drew me toward it.

Exactly, if you check, its trademarked, whoever buys it will be stuck with it. Always check before buying a name whether its trademarked, it can lead to legal trouble for you.

Thanks for the tip! Is there a database somewhere of trademarked names you use to cross-references domain names before buying?

How do you pick up new domains if you aren't bidding in auctions?

I don't think I will go in the red due to some sales that happened before but I am fomoing and picking up lots of names for 5X I would have paid before. ANd then there are Shill bidders who drive up prices.

Yesterday around 10 auctions restarted on a platform all of which i was second highest bidder.
Which means the other 10 I won, most were also shill bidded, because I was bidding against one or two similar IDs in most cases.

I don't know why we are all bidding against each other. We should learn to let go

I agree with this in general. Most of the auction prices just don't make sense as investors.

The rise in reseller prices in extensions like .CO and .IO for anything decent feels like a bubble to me. It reminds me of the bubble in Chinese quad premium LLLL a few years ago.

It is not a chinese quad premium bubble because it was caused by investing buying it in hopes of reselling for higher profit to resellers only with leveraged money by the Chinese.

The rise is .co and .io is simply a reflection of the overall auction market in general. Everything is going up and it is spreading over to alternate extensions.

And there are lot of end user sales in .co and .io and people are talking about it as well thus attracting more and more investors homing in on .co and io.
Take you for an example. There are lots of people like you who didn't see value in co and io and they see this amazing end user sales and start to want a piece of the Pie. You are still not interested, but there were people like you who recently entered, and it takes just a couple of new investors to drive up comp.

In that Stellar auction, there were at least 3 very very Big Dot com investors.

This has become a classic game theory case study. You know you don't want to pay more than 500 for a name, and. but you don't want bidder 2 to have it for 500 instead of you, yet you don't know what Bidder 2 is willing to pay, and it is mostly 2-3 bidders outbidding each other.
I go in with a budget of 500 and then do micro increments till 1500 easy.

If everyone start having a proper budget that they are not going to go beyond, then it should rationalise.

Afternic/Dan/Sedo, privately, NamePros, ExpiredDomains.net etc. Need to put in a shift to get good stuff but it can work.

I missed the boat on .io but had been picking up one word .co's fairly recently. As an example I got this for $600 on Sedo less than a month ago (don't type name pls) - had been up at least 3 days before I hit BIN.

Had 7/8 neat ones on my watchlist while waiting for funds for them. In less than a week all were gone (some of them had been up for a good few weeks).

Since then the price for anything similar has jumped up in four figures. The whales on Twitter have really been pushing .io & .co recently, I'm sure in 2021 single words in either will be completely out of reach for regular domainers - without getting super creative at least.
