Hi there!

I was just talking to a long-time colleague with whom I surfed the tail end of the dot com era, collecting domain names for our next big idea. The idea never was as good as we originally thought, so we ended up with a lot of fun domains that go nowhere.

So he told me that he has just let his many domains expire, one by one. I, on the other hand, am a domain hoarder and have been renewing mine like clockwork since the nineties. "What if one of those was the one?" I asked. "Inspiration that gathers dust is dead weight," he said with a tear forming in his eye.

So I'm ready to get rid of these things, but I want to do it in the most lucrative way possible. This is my first attempt, so I'm hoping to learn the do's and don'ts before I sell anything.

How is this site for a place to start? What's been your experience?

And here's my belated intro:

What’s your name?

A: Tony

Where do you live?

A: Seattle

What’s your level of expertise?

A: On average, all possible skills considered, I'm a novice.

How much experience do you have in the domain industry?
years, experience, etc.

A: Registered my first domain in 1994. Ran a site out of my house on a dedicated phone line.

What would you like to specifically learn first?
A: Best selling strategies.

Are you currently working on any projects or ideas?
A: Yes. Starting a freelance business since COVID killed my job.

What are your short-term goals in the next year?
A: I just registered an LLC and I'd like to build that into a viable option for covid related work shortages.

What are your long-term goals in the next 5 years?
A: A single letter .com domain, like X or something.

What was your first domain you purchased?
A: pagans.net

Why did you start investing in domains? Please tell us the story.
A: It was an accident. I'm a developer who has always enjoyed setting up servers on the internet. Also, I use it as a party trick where I can be sitting in a meeting when someone makes a word joke of some sort and register a domain, set up hosting, install wordpress, and show it on the conference room display before the laughter dies down. People are awestruck.

What domain technologies do you most want to see evolve the most?
A: I'd really like to see multi-byte characters not require an ascii equivalent.

Do you have any predictions for coming trends?
A: Serverless technologies expanding in the consumer realm.

What do you enjoy most about domaining?
A: The joy I feel when I register a domain name with a thrilling idea behind it.

Do you have any predictions for where the entire domain industry is going?
A: Fading to obscurity, maybe? Once all the regular words are in the hands of squatters, the jumbled abbreviations we're using heavily right now will drive the perception that an easy domain to remember is about the least important part.

What’s your funniest domain story?
A: I register things like iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.com when I get a free domain with a service. Put it on a business card and you will be cursed every time someone has to type in exactly 13 i's. Wait, how many was it?

What would you like to delegate most when you’re domaining?
A: Accounting.

What significant industry changes have affected you?
A: I was very happily employed in the international leisure ferry travel industry until COVID. Now I'm working on being self employed.

Hello!

In the mid - late 90s we too bought domain names for projects and, unsolicited offers to buy 'em for great ROIs came rolling in and so, domain sales sort of replaced some planned projects.

You might consider putting some of your names in the NamePros APPRAISALS section, it is possible you may receive some member opinions as to their perceived value of your names.

Welcome to NamePros!

Welcome! I suggest read, read, read before attempting to sell your portfolio. The great advice given here should allow you to get an idea of roughly what they are worth before you attempt to sell.

Ok, so I spent some time reading and it really looks like my goals here are not really in line with how the rest of you are using this site. The first recommendation I read that really fit my situation was to not think your clever idea is enough to make a domain valuable on its own. That obvious advice hit me right in the ribs.

The second was to have a real process for choosing your investment strategies rather than late night strokes of genius that have you frantically buying up all the related domains, filing for a trademark, and installing WordPress.

That basically describes me here. So many good ideas yet not a single success in 25 years. So now I'm just trying to unload them...had no idea you guys do this with precision (or at least want to do it with precision).

So I ask: if I'm just here to ask you guys to give one-off advice on minimizing my inventory, is that ok with you? I've run online communities before, so no offense if the answer is no. I don't want to be that guy.

Let me know! You have all been so friendly.

Thanks,
Tony

I fell off the wagon last night. I was feeling so confident I'd kicked this nasty habit.

I was reading a very good article in The Atlantic about "the 5 P's" that are making life rough for us right now: "The virus can spread before symptoms appear, and does so most easily through five P’s: people in prolonged, poorly ventilated, protection-free proximity." - The Atlantic.

So now I have the .com of people in prolonged poorly protected proximity minus the spaces. BUT, thanks to all of the reading I've done here I no longer maintain the delusion that it has somehow become more valuable as a result. It's six words, one of the words is "in", it's even a nightmare to read. So, the part of me that would usually be running in circles juggling a soup of ideas trying to turn it into a valuable plan can just take a break.

It was still fun and knowing a little more about what makes it bad made it even more fun for me somehow. It's like spraying graffiti on an invisible wall. $10 graffiti that only I know is there.
