My big blunder

I'm new to the forum and glad to meet y'all. So I wanted to tell you about my big blunder. A couple of years ago I got interested in flipping domains other than the typical dot coms and dot nets and was pretty happy to flip one for five figures that had a dot app ending. So I decided to lean in a little and reinvested those proceeds into about 25 dot page domains hot off the griddle with what I thought were killer one-word domains ending in dot page. All the words were common and several were just 3 and 4 characters long. The thing about the dot page domains though was that renewing many of them cost over a thousand $US each. I marketed the c%@# out of those domains, reduced prices during the year, and ended selling just a couple at a net loss overall. I hung onto three where the renewal fees were under a hundred and let the rest expire. So that was my big blunder and lesson learned. Be careful in the world of domains outside the dot coms, especially those with high renewal costs.

Hello @Matt Williamson .. and welcome to NamePros! :)

There certainly is money to be made in non-.com domains .. but you need to be EXTREMELY careful with what domains you choose and just as important with how much you pay. By paying for domains in the thousands of dollars to renew, you're often already into end user pricing. Most ngTLDs with premium pricing have essentially become the domainer, pricing their domains WAY too high to ever justify "investing" in (even if they could still be decent domains at those prices for an end-user). Take a look at an article I wrote a while back on ngTLDs:

Otherwise .. best of luck to you in your domaining adventures! :)

Welcome, I also dislike the high renewal cost of some extensions.
