GoDaddy increases DDC price 2x - $240 a year

Spaceship Spaceship

Godaddy is doubling their price for the DDC this year... I am highly disappointed! I have been with them forever.

I feel this is 100% due to their Expired Auctions... They know they have us. If you do the math you might be inclined to write this off as you can make your money back from auction purchases. But to me it feels like I am being extorted. A 2x price increase over 1 year seems greedy! :$::blackeye:

"Greed is good. Greed works." – famous movie quote

no way Jose 240 will make gd more profit on ddc than 120.

its just way fewer members and terrible marketing.

GODADDY GOES GREEDY.......or BETTER : GETS MORE AND MORE GREEDY.
THE LEVEL OF QUALITY OVER THE YEARS IS GETTING THE LEVEL OF 1 and 1 or IONOS, to trustwurthyness, but WITH MUCH HIGHER PRICES. It began with couponcodes suddenly only still working for once per account (happened now several years ago), and now doubling price DDC to get domainprices that are already costing by default 50% more (double) then most registrars to get 'normal prices' like other registrars. For Europeans : Some TVA +21% or more to be paid above the price (also for the DCC-renewal), etc..... etc....
What GDD does is the following : They put the price of their domains by default more then 60% higher then other registrars (no codes for renewals anymore, or only some), ask 294 USD for a (incl. TVA) membershipscard to get the price down some 40 or 50% for their domainrenewals. BUT !!!!! That doesn't count for .CO-domains : these are the exception only +/- 20% discount with membershipcard (DCC).
ONLY THING YOU STILL CAN DO IS TRANSFER OUT I PRESUME,...(if it works properly !!)... or GODADDY will loose lots of customers complaining more and more.

But if these customers aren't listenned to at a certain time... lots of members will silently going away with most of their domains away from Godaddy.
Several already did over the years.
@stub @Joe Styler

AND this during the corona-crisis during which lots of people loose money or regular job !
In stead of asking more money, they could think about solidarity, and give for 1 or 2 years FREE membership DDC.(includedauction membership etc...).

Sorry ... there are no excuses for doing this, IMHO. If they would have changed with 1 USD/month....nobody would have botherred. But what GDD is doing now is "du jamais vu".
(=never seen before).

I'm no sure why you included just me in your rant. I cannot be the only person you can think of who transferred their domains out years ago. I did still use their DDC though. For the times I used their expiring domain auctions. Which I still use. I haven't done the maths yet. But doubling the cost means I probably will not be able to warrant buying the DDC, at those rates.

GoDaddy caters for Retail Customers. Whereas I am a Wholesale Customer. So our destiny's are bound to be different.

Sorry, but you are the most "eyecatching" person and 14 year member here on Namepros, that explicitly writes "No Godaddy pushes ever" in his signature. It's not meant as an insult and my time is limited.

BTW : There are indeed others, probably among this thread, or who don't know yet. You simply was the one that popped the first in my mind.

Thanks for the heads up on this! I was able to renew early at the $119.88 rate so I'm good now for another 1.5 years.

Anyone who has the existing Domain Discount club will be able to renew it at the $120 a year rate. You are price locked at that price. The new price only impacts new purchasers.

That's good to know.

What would happen if I choose to let it expire and then manually purchase it again using a coupon code?

I remember when GoDaddy used to have 99 cent coupons all over the place (without any restrictions) and the DDC was something like $49 a year.

I miss those good old days, I wish that Godaddy would find a way to take care of the domainers who perhaps are not rolling in money, but have been registering domains as a hobby (which in a way might be adding to the close out domains that Godaddy is making money off).

I used to be a member of the Premier VIP club, but when my portfolio shrank in size I was kicked out. I still think that Godaddy needs to maintain a relationship with Oldtimer domainers regardless of the number of domains that they have. That just makes good business sense to take care of those who have been with Godaddy for a long time.

IMO

Thanks for the confirmation! For me, I have a habit of procrastinating, so wanted to make sure that I got it renewed! If I let it expire, then I would assume it would be considered a new purchase, which would be at the new rate increase.

In the mean time, I'm glad that they are keeping the current price for existing members.

You would pay the new price. The price lock exists on the current product you own so don't let it expire. :)

Can we buy 5 years now to avoid price increase?

In the past that wasn't the case. If you let it expire after f.i. 2 years (if you bought 2 years at once), it became a "new product" again (after 2 month or so) and a couponcode could be used so you could get the price down, to wait few months to get good price at good moment with a couponcode was "good to do".(if you didn't do that, you couldn't renew with a couponcode when it expired or just before, because it was seen as a renewal, and just as with domains couponcodes didn't work for renewals any more.
NOW it is the OPPOSITE as you explain, Joe, and in the meantime I let it expire/cancelled the membership (and didn't renew yet) for few months, planning to use a couponcode being when expirationperiod was done, to be "new again", as I did once in the past, SO now I'll be seen as a new customer. BUT NOW SUDDENLY : THE PRICE DOUBLES, AND COUPONCODE WON'T BE POSSIBLE, so I'll pay certainly double of 4 times what I payed before for 1 year.

Yeah, you should have paid $120 x 5 (for 5 years) in advance it's worth the investment.

@Joe Styler
I'm a member already many years (account is more then 10 years probably). and mostly bought 2 or 3 years membership of DCC.(not back in the beginning because then you could renew domains with couponcodes, but that isn't possible anymore). But it's after the period ended or when the membership had to renew that counted : how do I get the price down ? Expiring and waiting a while did the job in the past but now that's not the case. And also to answer your question : How could I know that a company doubles its price for such an immense membershipsfee. and for me there's TVA of 21% involved also.
It's just "nuts". Everytime I kept seeing 129 +21% USD when I wanted to be "new" again to be able to use couponcode, but couponcode now isn't working for months now as I recall..
And now it's even wurse: I see 239 USD or so + 21% for 1 year, cause on top of that (couponcode not working and price doubled.! Somewehere I even saw that for anoher membership that's normally included if you buy DCC, is not included, but costs 9 USD/month.

Edit: one thing I have to say...GoDaddy support is the greatest in the industry.

NOTHING, absolutely nothing could be further from the truth. They can read from a script, nothing more; their level of actual knowledge barely floats above zero.

Here is the article I referred to as coming out -

Here is an idea:

Why doesn't GoDaddy create a separate Registrar just for domainers with wholesale prices on everything. (separate, but still under the Godaddy brand and integrated with all the existing Godaddy products and services.)

I guess they can put you in charge of it since everyone here already knows you. :xf.wink:

If you are already a discount club member the renewals will be the old price not the new price increase.

But others provide competitive prices with extra freebies such as privacy & ssl without DDC. GD is the only registrar I know that charges investors for lower prices.

I understood that most of your customers that registar donains are not domain investors, but you also have expired auctions where investors pay huge amount of money. So if you care about domain investors and to be fair why dont you offer expired auctions & closeouts at the min registration price without DDC?

Also you can do something very nice which is to offer DDC for free (or at very cheap) for Namepros members like how Epik did by giving lowest prices to NP members (which I salute them for).

The problem is that the relationship between GD & domainers is a bit cold, we dont feel warm open arms from your side, our feedback is not listed to most of the time and it seems like it is just cold forced relationship where many are forced to use GD just to access the expired auctions.

What about domainers that used GD for many years and decided to subscribe to DDC now?! Do you think it is fair treatment?

I am proud to say im nearing 0 domains at Godaddy as of today. I do feel im missing out on some benefits of liquidity , but I prefer to let them Monopolize with out me taking part.

Although im still stuck with Afternic , so that is unfortunate I allow them any profit.

Good fortune to all that choose to pay 120 or 240 , 240 is actually more than 100s of millions monthly income in this sad world.

GoDaddy is the worst. Been with them for 15+ years. My DDC membership expired, did not renew it a month ago. Went to renew, thinking $120 a year and saw the price was now $240. What??? I contacted customer service. Nothing they can do, talked to them, chatted with them lol, just awful. I'll be finally dropping them and moving my 150+ names and would appreciate recommendations, dynadot, namecheap?

100% For Sure Dynadot. A $500 prepayment brings you bulk $9.25 registrations/renewals/transfers on .COM domains. No fuss, no muss. MUCH better all round registrar than GoDaddy. And NO BULL. Best move I ever made.
