question Do you check the site? Cold call outreach?

When I'm going through a list of ideal exact-match terms, I check several things for each one:

At a registrar, I look up availability, for the 0.01% chance the name is available, or to look up WHOIS info;

I look at Sedo / Afternic to see if it is available for buy now, or make offer;

I look at the site itself, to see if it has a "for sale" notice. ALSO, if it's some kind of old, neglected site, I write to the owner to see if they're willing to sell.

How many of you check the site and sometimes reach out to owners, even if they're not actively advertising their willingness to sell?

So far, that's how I got what's arguably my best domain name (Guatemala.GT) -- I reached out cold and made an offer, although nothing about the site said "buy me." It was just a developed mini-site related to Guatemala.

Today I made a similar outreach -- both via email and SNAIL MAIL, for a super-premium .com name. The owner is a FARMER and has not used the name in the context of its principal meaning. He hasn't even updated his site since 2007! I will let you know if I manage to complete the sale... if so, it will arguably be better than the rest of my collection put together.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, too.

If the owner eventually dies or his children take over, they will either let it expire and go to auction, or put a high price on it.

But if you contact them directly, it’s easier for them. They can take some money now without any trouble of making arrangements for auctions, or waiting for offers.
