Patent is for IP, right? You can trademark a "word".

As far as I know, you cannot "patent" a word, you "trademark" a word.
Anyway, your trademarked word will work only if you use it for your business.
You cannot register a trademark for a word and sit on it without using it for any business. Because then your trademark, even if registered, won't be valid.
As far as I know.

So I have a made up word that I'm eager to protect ... I don't want someone to use my word when I bring the domain public and putting some kind of patent on it/// What can I do

You can register the domain, but that's it.
Trademarks are for real business. If you pay the $275 to register a trademark for that word, you will need to say for what goods or services you will use it.
If you are not going to use it for a real business, as my understanding, you are just spending $275 for nothing.
In the US for example, if you don't use your trademark for 3 years, that trademark would be invalid at that point.
As far as I know..
