GoDaddy increases DDC price 2x - $240 a year

Godaddy is doubling their price for the DDC this year... I am highly disappointed! I have been with them forever.

I feel this is 100% due to their Expired Auctions... They know they have us. If you do the math you might be inclined to write this off as you can make your money back from auction purchases. But to me it feels like I am being extorted. A 2x price increase over 1 year seems greedy! :$::blackeye:

Awful. Lots of domains are going to move to dynadot and namesilo.
Not mine though. 120$ was enough.
240$ per account is hard to justify.

That being said if the goal was to get rid of domainers with small # of domains, OK.

Otherwise, thats dumb.

My thought is they really don't care and about domainers anymore. They want that end user big money they charge without DDC - and on the flip side domainers will pay about anything for DDC because they are forced into it to use the monopoly of GD Expired Auctions at a lower price point per domain acquisition.

Sucks cause I have been loyal to them even when there were cheaper options out there, because they have always been solid. They seem solid no more.

There are plenty of other options to acquire domains, and I try to stand on principles even if it inconveniences or costs me. I have a serious decision to make, and very little time to make it.

Actually disappoints me more than anything.

Most of my domains are @ GoDaddy, but $20/month is rather steep. They kind of force you into it now with their high standard retail prices.

That's some serious raise which hints at greed more than anything else, kind of disregards the purpose of "discount club"

Too bad, I am forced to use them as most of my sales are outbound within 60 days lock and most end users prefer Godaddy.

If this wasn't case, I'd 100% without a doubt use Dynadot.

What if you let the membership expire and then buy a new membership using a discount code? 30-40% off?

Yeah, that's quite an increase.

But in case anyone reading doesn't know:

You can use coupons on that, to reduce it by around 35 to 40%

Also, if you do enough business with GoDaddy, you can ask your rep to give you the DDC membership for free.

Edit: Haha, DrJacoby also suggested the coupon idea while I was writing my post

Has there been a press release or anything? Are they offering more services with the package beyond lower price registrations and the auction membership to in any way justify the huge price increase?

I thought it was high before. If you get many domains at auction, or prefer GD for other reasons such as reputation or quality of staff assistance, you almost need a membership, but this is a major jump.

Hope we learn more of their thinking.

I would have liked to see some sort of different levels at different prices (i.e. x domain names at discount costs Z while 10x costs more, kind of like DCC do).

If you are a small portfolio holder it is hard to justify this price, in my opinion.

What volume of business would that require?

You will quite often find good or clever coupons out there (where you pay in a different currency for example).

So if those continue to work or be available, you can get 30-50% or more off.

Worth checking out or at least was some months back.

For me personally, with that kind of a piss taking increase Godaddy can GFT's.

There are plenty more pleasant and efficient companies out there,
and with cheaper standard pricing.

I won't be renewing my discount club when its up for renewal.

It seemed expensive enough at $120 but I did the math and got it to lower the costs of expired auctions / closeout domains. Since I stopped partaking in these, it's completely useless, there are cheaper places to keep my domains without any subscriptions.

Anyone knows the date they autocharge for the renewal? 30 days prior?

I received no advanced notification and never ran across a Press Release, not to say they didn't post one somewhere. Only way I found out was the email notice of upcoming charge 10 days before renewal.

I am aware of no new services being offered.

On a side note I did notice they seem to be pricing everything on their site monthly now - but charging annually. I guess that helps with the initial sticker shock.

Looks like they send out the email notification 10 days prior and renew it on the cancellation date.

You can login to Godaddy and go to Renewals and "Cancel Renewal" and it will not auto-renew - but you will be able to keep using the service until the expiration date. (so long as you don't click the Cancel Service button)

I honestly can't think of a reason to use GD. They aren't competative in any area from pricing to customer service.

I don't think DDC is needed anymore.
Just get the auction membership (If they increase that one, it's really bad..)
And then, use one of the work-arounds to pay the renewals of your auction wins a bit less then nomal pricing (Playing with currencies, promo codes..)

Squeezing those margins at a time when competition is stiff. Not a smart move.

I use a registrar based in some random European country...last time I called their support, I swear the guy just woke up from a nap and forgot what he was doing. That's how much brand loyalty stacks up against pricing in this market.

Edit: one thing I have to say...GoDaddy support is the greatest in the industry.

yeah...for most people even last price was turnoff .. u can imagine how they feel now

what's the auction membership now gonna be? 100$?

clearly it's about more profit for gd ...but one has to seriously wonder if that's how it will go.

The screenshot by the OP seems to show it was going to auto-renew at the higher price.

Was GoDaddy planning on letting people know about this, or just autorenewing at 2x the current price?

This reminds me of what Legal Zoom did with their registered agent services a couple years ago. They just arbitrarily changed the price to 3x the current price, then autobilled without actually agreeing to it.
