Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Coronavirus: The possible long-term mental health impacts

Steven Taylor, author of The Psychology of Pandemics, and professor in psychiatry at the University of British Columbia, argues that “for an unfortunate minority of people, perhaps 10 to 15%, life will not return to normal”, due to the impact of the pandemic on their mental wellbeing. Australia’s Black Dog Institute, a leading independent mental-health research organisation, has also raised concerns about “a significant minority who will be affected by long-term anxiety”. In the UK, a group of leading public health specialists recently warned in the British Medical Journal that “the mental health impact of the pandemic is likely to last much longer than the physical health impact”.

THE SCIENCE OF SUPERSPREADING

https://vis.sciencemag.org/covid-clusters/

Why preventing hot spots of transmission is key to stopping the COVID-19 pandemic

"In late February, drug company Biogen held its annual conference in Boston. The United States had fewer than 20 known COVID-19 cases at the time. But one of the roughly 200 attendees must have carried the virus.

It triggered a big outbreak. At least 97 people who attended the conference, or lived in a household with someone who did, tested positive.

The Biogen meeting had become a superspreading event. Eventually, the virus spread from the meeting across Massachusetts and to other states. A recent study estimates it led to tens of thousands of cases in the Boston area alone.

COVID-19 superspreading events have been reported around the world. They happen in all sorts of places: bars and barbecues, gyms and factories, schools and churches, and on ships. And even at the White House."

Even with a recent infection in my workplace and two rounds of testing for all staff (all were negative), employees who have travelled are allowed to return to the office without any quarantine time. The person who was infected got the virus from a relative visiting from out of state, so it seems that the management would be extra careful about returning travelers.

People have an amazing ability to ignore reality even when it's right in front of them.

Are there any viewers/visitors of this thread from Switzerland? I'm thinking of adding Switzerland to the list as the number of cases are surging there. Not sure if that is due to increased testing or due to the weather forcing more indoor living. Any input would be appreciated.

Not from Switzerland myself, but was reading that Swiss hospitals in the french-speaking areas are reaching their saturation points and exceeding their capacities, so I expect the fatalities will begin rising in those areas.

https://covid19.healthdata.org/switzerland?view=total-deaths&tab=trend
From this chart and projection (see hospital resource use projection), it looks like bed capacity will be reached towards the end of November.

Perhaps someone can find and post an article on this?

Startling Case Study Finds Asymptomatic COVID-19 Carrier Who Shed Virus For 70 Days

A team of researchers and doctors has now reported the case of one woman with leukemia who had no symptoms of COVID-19 but 70 days after her first positive test, she was still shedding infectious SARS-CoV-2 particles.

This result is much longer than previous reports of hospitalised adults found shedding infectious SARS-CoV-2 virus up to 20 days after their COVID-19 diagnosis, plus other accounts of people shedding genetic material from the virus up to 63 days after their symptoms first appeared.

The new report should alert doctors and public health experts alike to the fact that people without symptoms and with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, can seemingly shed the SARS-CoV-2 virus for a really long time. In this case, even months.

It seems strange that people with weakened immune systems would have no symptoms.

The US just reported more than 100,000 new Covid-19 infections, the most cases in a single day since pandemic's start

This was barely mentioned in the news, as the nation is fixated on the presidential race. In my county, case numbers are rising by about 200 a day, which is pretty alarming.

Election judge worked despite COVID-19 diagnosis, then died

O'FALLON, Mo. (AP) — A suburban St. Louis election official who worked at a polling place on Election Day despite a positive test for the coronavirus has now died, raising concerns for the nearly 2,000 people who voted there.

St. Charles County, Missouri, spokeswoman Mary Enger said in a news release Thursday that the person, whose cause of death is not yet known, was an election judge supervisor Tuesday at the Blanchette Park Memorial Hall polling site in St. Charles, about 25 miles northwest of St. Louis. Enger said the county’s health department and election authority recently learned that the poll worker tested positive Oct. 30 for COVID-19 and was advised to quarantine for 14 days.

“The election judge nevertheless failed to follow the advice” and worked throughout the day on Tuesday, Enger said. “Authorities have informed the County that this individual has died, although a cause of death has not been given at this time.”

Heavy mutation worldwide is a given now, isn't it?
Testing by New Zealand scientists found it was "12 mutations away from the closest international genome".

"The biggest implications we might see from the evolution of this virus is that we need to adapt our vaccine and potentially have a few strains in that, but we're certainly not at that point yet.

As of today - 8th November 2020 - the USA has reported almost 10 million infections, has 4 million active cases, and has reported almost 250,000 fatalities.

This is roughly between a fifth and a quarter of the worlds total figures.

Hopefully now that the US elections are over, they can start dealing with this pandemic instead of election figures.
