I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

Yep, and you better get to work picking up those beer bottles.

And P.S. Siber is now owned by WHC.

Another think I would say about this is I would be all for one company dominating this service, that would fix the issue.

Anyone but MyID, their operation is handled like a grandma dinosaur.

I'm still completely shocked that a company so back in the stone ages with website, control panel, billing etc is so capable when it comes to catching domains.

WHC - A GoDaddy Company - Easily accomplished with their deep pockets and would cement them solidly into Canada.

I would love to know what happened to Pool. They use to catch MANY big names years ago. I don’t think they catch anything now.

Oh my.. I completly forgot about them. They're so quiet now.. I am surprise their website is still online. I though they were long gone. I tried to log in and... my account is still active! lol

NP is such a waste of time now. They haven’t caught anything decent in months. When I do bother, I get snipped at the last second.

Someone clearly has an automated process to snipe bids at the last second over there.

If only there was just 1 site that could just catch ALL of the .ca TBR’s being backordered so we wouldn’t have to play this cat and mouse type of game..... Hmmmmmmm.......

Personally, I too kinda wished CIRA just auctioned them off. Then we'd have the 1 system to deal with each week and it would save me some time. But CIRA isn't in the business of selling domains so that'll never happen, and if they tried, all the registrars would be suing their pants off.

The only way this scenario really happens is if one registrar buys all the other TBR-competitive registrars, or gets so good that they are 90% dominant. And that's not that far off from happening. Imagine if WHC next bought MyID. They'd be getting 85+% of the top TBR domains. At that point does anyone really care about what doesn't get reg'd by Siber or MyID? I'm already kinda at that point now. Then imagine if WHC felt confident enough to prioritize TBR on their own, then they wouldn't even need to have customers pre-bid. They could open the auctions to anyone, after they capture them in TBR.

That's really the last remaining thing that keeps average-joes out of the auctions is that they're closed auctions. It's currently a catch-22 for the registrars. If we don't pre-order, the registrars cant prioritize well. But if registrars got good at prioritizing on their own, they could in theory drop the pre-bids and make them open auctions.

As it stands now, the system isn't too bad. All you really have to do is put in mindless low-ball bids at 2 places, then let the wheat separate from the chaff in auction the next day. If you've really got a hard-on for a specific domain, then yes, to cover your bases, you're going to have to pre-bid at a dozen places. But as everyone is realizing, the outliers getting anything good is getting so rare that it's pretty pointless trying.

The point everyone is missing while pining away for a "Walmart of .CA Domains" is that the CIRA's mandate is NOT to make life easier for domain investors, but to enhance the online Canadian marketplace, which also includes creating a large and prosperous selection of Canadian-based registrars.

If the CIRA chooses.. ah, let's say... WHC/Siber to the lone TBR administrator just so that "too busy" domain investors can sleep in til 3PM, what do the other registrars do? Close down? Fire half their employees? Have a fire sale on servers? How is that satisfying the CIRA mandate?

And most importantly, why would the CIRA go directly against their registrar customer base in order to satisfy a small group of lazy domain investors?

You and I are NOT their customers, Siber, MyID, Dot-CA, NamesPro, etc. are, and under the ICANN rules, the CIRA cannot sell or auction expired .CA domains, only registrars can. The CIRA are administrators only and they get their revenue from the .CA registrar base, so do the math.

That's because everyone has speculated that they're mostly just a front for their own domains, so I doubt they really care too much about their customers, other than a few that drop coin in TBR. There is no reason to update an interface that works for managing their own domains. The last thing they would want are more customers.

And if WHC or GoDaddy bought out MyID, it would only be to shut them down with a really long non-compete clause...

Truer words were never spoken, and those "4- and 5-figure TBR sales" are easy to accomplish when you're only paying $8.99 per domain.

And DAMN, if there isn't a LOT of money flying around this week. Who won the lottery?

I didn't miss that point, as mentioned, it'll never happen. Just saying that a single marketplace is good for some of us who would prioritize time over money. I don't think it would affect prices too much anyways, as it stands there are only 2 players anyways.

I think they are already good to go as far as CIRA is concerned...

GoDaddy Domains Canada Inc.
2900-550 Burrard Street
Vancouver, British Columbia V6C 0A3
GST No. 807907019RT0001

Yes, clearly GoDaddy has had a Canadian Presence for a _long_ time now. I don't know how anyone thought they weren't!

I'm just looking at it from a real-world economics POV - why would the CIRA close down all those registrars, lose all that revenue, and leave all those employees jobless... just to make life a bit easier for a handful of domain investors.

When you look at it that way, it looks pretty freaking stupid.

I never said they didn't, as they post Canadian-based jobs all the time.

But it's not a fully-equipped .CA Registrar location equipped to match the CIRA requirements for a TBR registrar. I'm sure GoDaddy could invest a few million to create one, but why would they bother? :xf.laugh:

Damn, other than ISA.ca, MyID sure robbed the store this week.

Virtually everything I was looking to bid on got scooped up by Danny this week. Insane.

I work my ass off selling a couple of domains to have the bread to make a few serious bids, and then MyID wins.. like all of them.

But this still doesn't change my opinion of the current TBR system or my support of the free market and understanding of economics, only that MyID is a bunch of #$@&%.

No offense but, it's kinda funny how that topic really gets you riled up when I know, that you and everyone else knows, that it'll never happen anyways.

What might _actually_ happen is that registrars will put in their terms of service (that no one reads ever) that expired/unpaid for domains can be auctioned off by the registrar, and the number of good names going into TBR will dramatically drop as the best names get auctioned off before they hit TBR - thus rendering TBR kinda pointless.

That is something that GoDaddy would do. Being the largest registrar, they have the most expiring inventory... Then they just need to give domainers a killer deal on renewals to bring over the _best_ inventory. Then every time a domainer gives up the ghost, Godaddy will make a shitload as the domains expire and go to auction.

I know it cannot ever happen, I just hate conversations about fairy tale, "pie in the sky" crap like elves and unicorns and the "Walmart of .CAs". It bugs me and it shows.

If you guys sat around here constantly jabbering about leprechauns and how you want to organize a search party to go find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I'd be just as belligerent.

And my day simply can't get any better - I just got a trio of GoDaddy offers (probably from the same hobo)... and each of them for $20. :xf.cool:

Haha so true and I definitely get that, but when I know its ridiculous, I can just chuckle and ignore it. Kinda like when my wife watches all those so called "reality" ghost and alien TV shows. I just channel my inner Elsa...

Haha, yes, we all know your other hot-button issue too. It is going to be so easy to f*@# with you going forward. Right before tomorrow's auctions end, Maple & I are going to start tag teaming between talking about CIRA's new fictional in-house TBR auction system and sending $20 offers to you on godaddy. You'll be so frazzled you'll forget to bid.

Never mind, I see I'm only in two auctions worth bidding on and they're probably going to be higher than I think is worth it. I'll delay my devious plan for a better week.

Just reading that shaved a year off my life.

And I'm in the same boat in terms of auctions (I think I have one I might be on), as I was not joking that MyID robbed the store. Everything I wanted is sitting in their greasy little server - I had zero interest in ISA.ca, just playing along, but MyID sure played me.

Now the moment of truth... seeing whether I won any scrubs outright at Siber.

P.S. Another $20 GD offer just popped up on my laptop. LOL

And as a special bonus, it looks like I won zero domains at Siber - I even got outbid on the junk. What a week.

Laugh now my friends, let the jelly belly wiggle to and fro

In the end the TBR system will have to be overhauled, I don't know what that will look like but eventually it has to change. It cannot continue to be dominated by two companies, eventually it will raise the ire of others. Then it will somehow change to make it more of a draw based on luck instead of quick technology or it will get centralized to one place.

Personally I don't know how it will look but I will bet that eventually change will come.
I'm currently crafting a letter of complaint to CIRA and I'm thinking of putting a petition online specifically complaining about the MyId dominance and one sided way TBR is distributed in Canada. The petition will probably get 3 votes because the public has no idea what TBR is but at least it will start a process at cira. They will have to acknowledge receipt of my letter and that at least brings the concern to their attention.

I believe still believe in a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Don't let it get under your skin my friend, we can have opposing views, time will tell what was fact or fiction.
Until then I'm sitting down with my bowl of lucky charms and enjoying the show :xf.grin:
