I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
So basically it's an auction house for expired domains they manage to catch? This is NOT a drop-catching service, and it's pretty easy to see through the BS.

You might as well call a spade a spade.

Wow... I catch a nerve when I bring this up

Is TBR not necessarily the same thing, expired names coming up for auction if more than 1 person wants the domain?

Just saying... I mean... calling a spade a spade.

Sibername used to do something similar a few years back Frank.
If you had put in a bid on a TBR and they got and it was going to auction because more than one person put in a bid, you could bid on all the names they got that week that were going to auction.
If you were the only bidder and they got the name it went to you.
I used to be in many of those and they were competitive. @rlm might remember those days.

Yes, but with sav anyone can bid, even if you did not place a back order. I like the idea of completely open. Would probably make more money for the auction, if you increase the number of bidders you're bound to get more bids.

If I was running an auction if any kind I would want maximum participation.

Come on, you can want your Walmart domains with your eggs and milk all you want, but this SAV.com idea is a blatant scam that even a monkey could sniff out.

It's not a "free dropcatcher", it's a open market auction house where domainers are expected to supply the time, effort, and research to provide the domain inventory for it. Why else do you think it's "free" to backorder?

It's like some nitwit providing "free paint and brushes"... as long as you paint his house with them.

Yup

A lot of research goes into spotting nice one word .ca's from a drop list.
I mean it's not like just anyone could do that, given there are just sooooo many choice words in the english vocabulary.

Sorry, I don't buy it, a privileged few have had privileged access for too long and eventually it has to stop.
It's not "if" but "when" it happens with .ca that is the question.

Seriously if I were sibernames why would I take 3-8k as a winning bid when I could get 20k as a winning bid.
It's has to happen with TBR as well, wide open to anyone just like new registrations are open to anyone, the current system is complex and convoluted.

Of course the people that do well with TBR want to keep it just as it is, because it's their dirty little secret, a place with closed bids to people only in the know, locking out consumers and others too busy to play the game.

You seem to be under the gross misinterpretation that domainers are going to just line up and give away all their research, hard work, and time, just so freeloaders can stroll their lazy butts in and bid against them for primo domains.

Seriously, how stupid do you think they are?

Instead, being relatively astute and valuing their time and effort, they won't go near a scam service like this with a 10-foot pole.

And if it's sooo easy to find prime domains on the drop list, and soooo simple to spot them, why are constantly on here whining rather than finding them yourself and bidding? You say it's childishly simple, yet you want someone else to do all the work for you. Which one is it?

BTW, this will be my last comment on this subject, as continued discourse just gets you all riled up and provides a forum for this bizarre and outlandish "Costco Domains" scenario you have envisioned and the conspiracy theory of you being targeted because you're "too busy", while the rest of us (with FT jobs, families, etc.) seem to have no issue with perusing a domain list once a week.

HeHe... So you're calling the guys willing to pay premium dollars freeloaders?

Also, you seem to be the only one getting your knickers in a knot, oh yes you have a vested interest that's right, almost forgot that.

PS. I'm actually quite heavily invested in Costco stock, it's made me quite a bit of money :xf.wink:

Yes, freeloading is in reference to work and effort, not the amount of money you have. I know plenty of lifetime freeloaders who inherited family businesses or trust funds and now have lots of money.

oh yes you have a vested interest that's right, almost forgot that.

You do realize you're talking to a guy who provided a FREE TBR Picks List for years, right? Right? :xf.grin:

Dammit, another GoDaddy "sale" that I just found this morning, sitting in "pending buyer purchase" status (GoDaddy doesn't send an email until it's paid) and I think we all know how this will turn out. >:(:arghh:

I know plenty of lifetime freeloaders who inherited family businesses or trust funds and now have lots of money.

That may be but I was a penniless kid all alone on the streets at 16 and earned my way to where I am today. I started out washing cars with a grade 10 education for a Mercedes-Benz franchise. Then apprentice mechanic, service advisor, parts advisor, parts manager, fixed operations manager, general manager. I was hungrier than everyone and ended up running a multi million dollar franchise winning multiple awards and accolades from Mercedes-Benz. I won trips, plaques, gold rings, diamonds, had free cars to drive, you name it.

In the end what did it mean?
Nothing, you learn to let the money work for you and not you for the money, that is the biggest lesson I took home.

You do realize you're talking to a guy who provided a FREE TBR Picks List for years, right? Right?

TBR lists are already free for everyone, do you still give out your top picks well in advance to give everyone a crack at the top domains?
No, one has to spend hours looking at thousands of useless names trying to sort through the garbage or leftovers.

Eventually a smart auction will do the work, make the recommendations and open up the bidding.
I will simply come in, look at the top potential domains, decide what I want to bid on and place my bids.
I will win some domains and I will lose some, there will be people bidding more than me and some bidding less, however in the end it will be a fair system. It has to happen, you can criticize it all you want but opening up TBR to everyone (canadian) regardless who wants to bid is inevitable. Auctions are leaving good money on the table and eventually some smartie (similar) sav will figure it out and put it into play.

Personally I would love to see a non profit organization put in charge of auctioning off the TBR's and then reinvesting the money into the low income housing market or something. If .ca's are truly for Canadians then TBR's could be harvested for charity instead of personal profits, but that is a discussion for another day.

No, because real life + COVID intruded and my time was needed elsewhere, but that doesn't change the fact that I freely gave out TBR Picks (Top Picks + Secondary Picks + Leftovers after the run) for years and that I'm the last guy you should be calling out for greed or selfishness.

Either do the work and reap the benefits, or use your $$$ to pay someone else to do it. We're a service economy after all, and earlier you said it was childishly easy to find top words, so I'm not sure which Maple comment to believe.

Bingo - the man wins a prize

TBR list gets published
Top picks get selected and published

Let the bidding begin, highest bidder takes it

Is that what you mean by paying someone to do it? :xf.wink:
I mean, I don't mind the paying part us much I mind the effort in having to peruse useless domains I would never bid on in the first place.

Even having to get in line hoping to pick the right company to win the drop is an absolutely absurd business process. CIRA has to end this madness. If they are monitoring this topic then they have to see it. It's only a question of time before they're called out on it.

Open it up CIRA.... DO you hear me Gorbachev.... Tear down that wall!! :banghead:

I'm the last guy you should be calling out for greed or selfishness.

You misunderstand me, I admire what you did, my critique is of the system not of you.
You are the one jumping in with strong words and innuendos, my message is singular in purpose.

Open it up for all, I have no battle with you, in fact I respect you for what you have done but I fear you are too far involved in the system to see that more transparency for TBR is required.

I feel that both of you have made great points but I agree with this. CIRA could reinvest some of that TBR money into advertising. I personally love their ads so why not more of them?

My opinion is that there be only ONE TBR auction site BUT you still have to backorder ahead of time to be in on that auction. That part only makes sense and is fair for the individuals who actually took some time to look at the list.

Putting bids in at multiple locations is very time consuming week after week knowing that most of these places are a waste of time but there is always that 1% chance one will get one so you waste your time anyway.

OMG yes yes yes

Finally someone that sees what I see. I would take even this. If I could be assured I could I put in the effort.

I will take any little gain, that would be a perfect start.

Wow, these US State drops at the very end sure infused the list with a lot of viable domains, and really have to start paring down my list this week.

It's the "Hall of Very Good" once again, and with a lot of nominees.

"Hall of Very Good"
Is there a hidden message in here and I’m just too slow to get it or are you just stating? :xf.grin: If you’re just stating then I agree. It there is a hidden message, I’m screwed. :)

•••
No hidden message, just a lot of "Very Good" domains, without any true top-end premiums. That makes it very difficult to pare down a TBR pick list. There are so many "Very Good" potentials but none that really stand out, so it's tough to narrow things down.

The "Hall of Very Good" is the building next to the "Hall of Fame" for guys like Eli Manning and Philip Rivers, while Peyton and Tom Brady are unanimous first-ballot in the other place.

It's obvious so far that ISA.ca is the cream of the crop this week, and it's not even close.

This is a very interesting domain, as not only is a premium LLL, ending in "A", it's also a technical standard, and could be very useful in promotion for companies that support it.

P.S. I went on a bit of a sales blitz this week (pushing domains I've had 3-figure offers on to see if I could land one) and ended up selling two domains. I plan to use those proceeds to go after a couple of domains on the list and punishment bid any who stand in my way. Hahahaha :ROFL::ROFL:

I am really looking forward to Wednesday, as I'm playing with house money. And play I will.

Yup. Will be another 4 figure sale if MyId or Sobername grabs it. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that Jesus name in Islam is ʿĪsā. I know you’re up on your Quran names. ;)

Yes, that's the first part of the name (Jesus son of Mary) - good work Sherlock!

Of course, this just makes it more difficult for me to win, but I've got a big sack.. along with 2 big sacks of money that says I'm gonna do it!

After dealing with the basement reno for a few weeks now, I am soooo looking forward to blowing some money tomorrow that I don't know if I'll be able to sleep. :xf.grin:

RLM I'm 'a callin' you out!

ISA lot's of money I personally would not be bidding on.

I have a number in mind and if it goes over that, I walk away. And it's not just ISA.ca, as I have several domains on my list, that one's just going to be the most expensive. I probably won't get it, but I plan to win some, and I'm gonna make sure everyone pays a fair price. :xf.grin:

I'm just blowing off some steam from after insane noise in our basement over the last 2 weeks - not to mention the deliveries, dust, garbage, and oh yeah, the $$$$.

But it's halfway done, and I'm gonna have some fun.

My criteria nowadays is pretty simple....

One Word
Singular (unless plural makes more sense)
Positive Meaning
Can it be used in commerce

Those are the four main points I look for when I purchase and "can it be used in commerce" and "can I make a website for it" are two different things. :xf.laugh:

An example of a one word I own that I would NEVER buy again.....

are you ready

opponent.ca

I mean, whatever possessed me to purchase that one :inpain:

Short first names are very hot too, but I know exactly what you mean.

The word has to be singular and core (no -ed or -er etc.), along with being highly recognizable, easy to spell, and offer a positive + powerful meaning and connotation.

PRIME is a good example, as it means "the best, tops, excellent" but I would also not buy PRIMER or PRIMES or PRIMED or PRIMING, but the core word PRIME by itself is a killer brandable.
