Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the antiviral drug Veklury (remdesivir) for use in adult and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older and weighing at least 40 kilograms (about 88 pounds) for the treatment of COVID-19 requiring hospitalization. Veklury should only be administered in a hospital or in a healthcare setting capable of providing acute care comparable to inpatient hospital care. Veklury is the first treatment for COVID-19 to receive FDA approval.

Yes I saw the WHO study... on the FDA trials they say remdesivir improved the recovery time:

"One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (ACTT-1), conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, evaluated how long it took for subjects to recover from COVID-19 within 29 days of being treated. The trial looked at 1,062 hospitalized subjects with mild, moderate and severe COVID-19 who received Veklury (n=541) or placebo (n=521), plus standard of care. Recovery was defined as either being discharged from the hospital or being hospitalized but not requiring supplemental oxygen and no longer requiring ongoing medical care. The median time to recovery from COVID-19 was 10 days for the Veklury group compared to 15 days for the placebo group, a statistically significant difference."

They did three clinical trials with remdesivir.

AstraZeneca’s Oxford COVID-19 vaccine provokes immune response

AstraZeneca’s coronavirus vaccine accurately follows genetic instructions programmed into it by its developers at Oxford University — successfully provoking a powerful immune response, according to an analysis by independent scientists.

“Until now, the technology hasn’t been able to provide answers with such clarity, but we now know the vaccine is doing everything we expected and that is only good news in our fight against the illness,” said David Matthews, a virology expert at Bristol University who led the research.

The inevitable has happened in my workplace -- an employee tested positive for Covid. I say it was inevitable because 90% of the staff are Covid deniers, with few wearing masks or observing social distancing. We were all tested Thursday (Day 3) and so far everyone has tested negative.

This got me to wondering how positive tests are reported. I think the official counts come from tallying results from each county in the country, but I'm curious whether all positive test results get added to the official totals.

The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Marcos Pontes, pointed out on Monday (19), in an interview with the program A Voz do Brasil , produced by the Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) , that the drug nitazoxanide has the capacity to reduce the viral load of covid-19 by 95% in patients at the beginning of treatment.

“Nitazoxanide started to be tested in February, along with another 2,000 drugs initially with artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling, computer graphics at the National Biosciences Laboratory and, of these, in five of them they showed the ability to inhibit the virus, at least in simulated form. . There they were tested in vitro, in human cells and, of these five, nitazoxanide showed 95% reduction, inhibition of the virus ”, he explained. According to the minister, the research data will be released after review and publication in an international scientific journal.

According to the minister, double-blind tests were performed, when neither the patient nor the doctor knows which medication is being taken, and randomized, when patients are randomly assigned to two groups, one receiving the medication and the other receiving a placebo. The offered dose was 500 milligrams of nitazoxanide, three times a day, or the placebo for five days.

“Clinical tests were carried out with 1,500 patients and the tests showed that, in fact, this drug reduces viral load. That was the purpose of the test. [Reduces] viral load for patients admitted early, who were detected with covid-19, start treatment, ”he said.

In making the research announcement, the minister said that the drug cannot be used by those who do not show symptoms of the disease, but only for people in the early stage of infection. "It is not prophylactic, it is not for prevention. It is only after the virus is detected," he said. Nitazoxanide is a vermifuge already known in Brazil, currently used in the treatment of rotavirus.

According to Marcos Pontes, the inclusion of the drug in the treatment protocol for the new coronavirus in the Unified Health System (SUS) will be made after analysis by the Ministry of Health.

Very good news. That's the crucial point, to develop immune response also on older people:

"The news that older people get an immune response from the vaccine is positive because the immune system weakens with age and older people are those most at risk of dying from the virus.

If it works, a vaccine would allow the world to return to some measure of normality after the tumult of the pandemic."

People aware of the results from so-called immunogenicity blood tests carried out on a subset of older participants say the findings echo data released in July that showed the vaccine generated “robust immune responses” in a group of healthy adults aged between 18 and 55.

What does this mean for 55+ and 18- ?

That refers to the study from July, that was for people between 18 and 55.

The results showed positive outcomes for adults over 56, including the especially higher-risk age group of those 70 and older, and were based on analysis of previously conducted interim safety and immune-response data, AstraZeneca and Oxford said Monday.

The elderly generally have been prone to more-severe Covid-19 symptoms than younger people. Thus, researchers have been looking for evidence that a vaccine will be able to specifically help protect them.

The UCLA study also found that some areas of the country have a much higher overlap in nursing home staffing than others.

"There are some facilities in Florida, in New Jersey, where they're sharing upwards of 50 to 100 workers," says UCLA associate professor Elisa Long, who, along with her colleagues, examined data during the federal visitor ban from March to May. "This is over an 11-week time period, but that's a huge number of individuals that are moving between these facilities; all of these are potential sources of COVID transmission."

They also found the more shared workers a nursing home has, the more COVID-19 infections among the residents.

It’s Time to Talk About Covid-19 and Surfaces Again

Consider, Wyllie says, the extraordinary chain of events that would need to happen to successfully spread SARS-CoV-2 on a surface. A sufficiently large amount of the virus would need to be sprayed by an infected person onto a surface. The surface would need to be the right kind of material, exposed to the right levels of light, temperature, and humidity so that the virus does not quickly degrade. Then the virus would need to be picked up—which you would most likely do with your hands. But the virus is vulnerable there. (“Enveloped” viruses like SARS-CoV-2 do not fare well on porous surfaces like skin and clothing.) And then it needs to find a way inside you—usually through your nose or your eye—in a concentration big enough to get past your mucosal defenses and establish itself in your cells. The risk, Wyllie concludes, is low. “I’ve not once washed my groceries or disinfected my bags or even thought twice about my mail,” she says.

Low risk is not, of course, no risk, she adds. There are high-touch objects that merit disinfection, and places like hospitals need clean rooms and furniture. People at high risk from Covid-19 may want to take extra precautions. But the best advice for breaking that object-to-nose chain, according to all the health experts I spoke with: Wash your hands.
