I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
But I'm sure you still got something, a lot of domains get picked up each week, I only get a handful.

We'll see when Siber opens up the door at 4-5PM, but I think I got my "Top Secret" domain that I literally needed to contact the CIRA to get it released from captivity.

And I know what you mean about taking a kick at the NP can every week and coming up empty - but every once in a while they hit the jackpot and we're all moaning about groaning about someone getting a steal.

Well you certainly can't drop a tidbit like that without the rest of the story.

I'll wait til I am absolutely certain it's in my account before breathing another word.

And it's not even that great a domain, and more like a cool detective story with (hopefully) a happy ending.

And the half-moment of truth approaches...

Not bad, I got my "Top Secret" domain, another I really wanted, and one that I don't know what to do with. But they were all cheap, which gives me some $$$ to fight it out with RLM over a couple other more lucrative domains that I just know he outbid me on at the last second.

Was the "top secret" one of these?

torontowindows.ca
iregistry.ca
quitting.ca
ontheclock.ca

Time to spill the backstory!

16 emails received yesterday from 4 different email addresses with a highest offer of $85 for papr.
Between auction and email notifications I have now received about 22 offers on this domain since the weekend.

I finally did respond

If I had to guess I would say it's iregistry.ca

No, none of those.

It was "Top Secret" because I was watching the domain a month+ ago but it never dropped. It just sat there in limbo, so I contacted the CIRA to find out why, and discovered that it had been in use previously with 3rd-level province (on.ca, pq.ca, bc.ca, etc.) domains, and there was still one active so it had to stay off the market.

Then right after I'm told that there are actually no active province-level domains left (it was the last one), and the CIRA has to register it, then delete it, and 45 days later it will hit the TBR. So I waited, tossed in a few bids at various registrars and won it today.

But again, the domain is nothing special (other than it's as old as the hills) and it's the story behind it that's pretty convoluted.

And could someone please tell me what's so special about CRILF.ca, as it was at the top of many TBR lists this week and went 6th overall.

All I could find today was the "Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family".

And dammit, I can soooo close to winning Waterway.ca (I tried to pull a Flagstone) - the times are an absolute dead heat and now I have to fight with RLM over it. Oh joy!

ah, ok, so nothing too exciting. Speaking of domains old as the hills, the oldest domain this week slipped through the cracks, in case anyone wants to handreg it. FreeAgents.ca, from 1999...

I'm sure this one is older (WHOIS was 2000 prior to being re-registered by the CIRA), it's just not associated directly with the .CA.

And I'm pretty sure EFS and Centerfold are both older. Encrypted.ca was an old one too.

It's incredibly difficult to track domain age, as places like Archive.org are more guesswork than anything else, especially with .CA. I find domains that a well-known business has owned and operated since before the CIRA WHOIS date of 2000, yet Archive.org shows an earliest date of 2006 or something.

CRILF.ca has a wicked SEO profile

yeah, that's pretty absurd. I've seen weird shit like that before, not to that extent of getting 16 messages from 4 emails, but I definitely get a couple at a time, sometimes the same day or days apart, on domains that get little activity otherwise. I chalk it up to people from the same company inquiring under different names, I'm not even sure if they do it on purpose or are oblivious that someone else also inquired. Or domainers seeing a news story about something and the next thing you know they're all looking it up...

I’m probably guilty of that one so that would be my guess. Sometimes I will see a story or an ad when I’m out and right away I’m on CIRA to see who owns it or even punching it in to my Safari. It’s happened in the past where I came across a name and I look it up and low and behold I come across some “Bonfire” site. I don’t bother inquiring because I figure the owner probably wants a million for it and will get it at some point. lol :)

Lol, I carried around one of those little voice recorders taking memos as I drove around, at home, on vacations, everywhere. I just didn’t want to forget any domain ideas to check. That was back pre-iphone days.

I like when I think of a name that seems it would be a good one and search it and see I already own it:xf.eek::xf.confused:O_o ... I assume/hope I’m not the only one that has happened to

That one hasn’t happened to me yet. I guess if one owns quite a few thousand names, I can see how that happens..... Or if someone has a terrible memory. :)

So what happened to RLM, did he fall down a well or something?

I just won 3 auctions at Siber (which I was sure he sniped me on) and no action at all... I was just waiting for the rug to get taken out from under me, and it was one min bid and nada.... :wideyed::wideyed:
